oh man, i just ordered the silver one from oly last night. B&H would have avoided sales tax for me plus gotten here in one day (i live in NJ)

i hope oly ships fast.

silver is good because if you have all black lenses, silver is a fast way to differentiate in your bag (my strategy for going silver)

Black at Adorama for $99

i think for this price there is nothing price performance wise that can beat it (for a new lens).

It is a sharp and light lens that I have with me all the time!:-)

That lens is $99 everywhere: Also Adorama and the OlpsUSA website.

What do you all think of this lens on a Pany body? I've got a G3 and looking for a little more reach. I know I wouldn't have any IS option, but if shooting during the day handheld I should be fine, right? And a tripod for anything else? What do you think?

Spend $100 more and get the Panasonic zoom. Some day in your travels, you'll lose a photo and it will cost more than $100 to go back to where you lost it.

It's rare that I need a telephoto lens... but for $99, it's really tempting me. Should I get one for my OMD?
Yes.

yes. In two words, "buy it." The 40-150 remains the one lens that made the transition from 4/3s to m4/3s with virtually no change in quality. At it's price point, it's the best lens Oly makes. Maybe even Pany AND Oly. The next best lens is the m4/3s 45/1.8.

The above is IMHO, but you'll find a whole raft of threads on this lens. I got mine for $120 off the shelf from a Ritz going-out-of-business sale, and love it. Even at that price...it was a steal.

I use this lens on a Panasonic G3. I'm able to get pretty consistent hand held results using the reciprocal of focal length x2 -- that is, 1/320 sec @150mm

From 100mm and shorter, my results are almost always perfect outdoors. I don't use the lens hand held in low light.

I normally use shutter priority mode to make sure the shutter speed doesn't drop below 1/320. Sometimes, 1/400.

Here are some photographs taken with the G3 and this lens:

The suggestion to consider the Panasonic 45-150mm is not without merit, because of the OIS. It's also on sale ($199, silver)at B&H

Richard

Thanks for posting your photos and your experience with the lens, really appreciate it.
You are welcome.
Looks like the 45-150mm Panasonic is pretty good. I don't mean to hijack the thread, but what do you think of it vs. the 45-200?
It's probably best to start a new thread, asking for users' comments on these lenses. I've not seen/used either.

Richard

I put in an order for the 40-150 last night. Adorama still had it for $99. I do own the pany 45-200 - it's okay, but not great - can be soft especially at 200mm. Looking at the SLR Gear reviews on these two lenses the 40-150 is better at all focal lengths and is very good from 40-100. So I figured a sharp pic at 150mm cropped might be preferable to a soft pic at 200mm uncropped. If you need the extra length of the 45-200, it's not a bad lens - just not great.

Anyway, for $99, it's not much of a risk to try the 40-150 and it weighs 1/2 of the 45-200, which since I rarely shoot at telephoto range, a lighter but optically better lens that only costs $99 is appealing.

I don't shoot a lot of telephoto, but if I did, I'd go for the 75-300. It weighs only a small bit more than the 45-200, but is sharper. If I decided to go on a picture safari to Africa, for example, I think I'd definitely be looking to buy the 75-300.

Thanks for the heads up. I just ordered a black one from Olympus Canada with free shipping and a 5% discount for filling in their survey. $95 plus tax free delivery, can not go wrong!
