Which lens to choose, price is about the same.

Panasonic 25mm : 449,88 €

Olympus 17mm F1.8 : 467,21 €

although i have 25 f1.4 but for street photography 17 would be best choice.

Both. I've been shoting street photography with the 17mm f/2.8 and the Leica 25mm f/1.4. They are very diferent lenses, love the boken of the 25/1.4 and love the 35mm (eq) angle view.

I sold my 17/2.8 and pursache the 17/1.8 today, so I'm waiting for it, and cannot tell you how the 17/1.8 is.

But, If you can't get both, I would get the 25/1.4 (new) and the 17/2.8 (2nd hand, about 140€). It`s just my opinion.

Check out my blog, there are a lot of street photograpy with both lenses.

Neither. Buy 20mm f1.7 Panasonic for 1/2 the price and apply the savings to 45 f1.8 Oly and you are set for the foreseeable future.

i do mostly street photography with my APC camera, and i'm looking to get a m4/3rd camera. i went over several hundred street scenes and i found that i used a 35mm equivalent of 25-50mm focal length. so that would be between 12 and 17mm on a m4/3.

So I'm thinking the 17mm would be better.. if you only wanted to have one lens and not have to switch if you need quick speedy candids and stuff and you dont want to switch lenses.

The 25 might be better for portrait stuff ? less distortion.. i think ??

anyone ???

anyone ???

BEUELLER ???????

I think it entirely depends on the field of view you personally like. If you can go through your catalog of photos, you should see a trend in favorites shots as to whether you gravitate to a wider angle or a normal view. If you have a kit zoom lens, try that with the zoom taped to 17mm and 25 mm and see what you use/like, the most.

For street photography, from the days of 35 mm film, I have always liked the 35mm FOV or 17 mm in MFT speak.

Not an easy choice. Both lens are adequate to what you need.

I like both for different reasons, the Panasonic Leica 25mm have a better depth of color, and good detail, the 17mm is almost equal. I think you have to decide that on the field of view that both lens are capable. If you like better a wide field of view go for the 17mm. If not choose the 25mm.

Another very sharp lens to consider is the Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7, the only thing is that is not so fast to AF like those above, but it is a great lens.

That's sort of a tough call. The 25mm is extremely versatile. The 17mm sounds like a pretty good lens, but not on the level of the 25mm. Between those two, I'd probably go for the 25mm.

For street shooting, I use my Voigtländers of different lengths: 25mm f0.95, 35mm f1.4 and 75mm f2.5. Occasionally I'll use my SLR Magic 12mm T1.6, but it's a bit wide for general street shooting. The 20mm is pretty good, too. I prefer a bit longer lenses on the street. The 35mm is a favorite for subway shooting, too, because it's so compact and I like the extra reach. It's almost a portrait lens. There are times when I'll carry the 20mm and 35mm for a very small set of lenses.

Another option is the 14mm f2.5 pancake. I think this boils down to the way you see and focal length that matches that. The 17mm f1.8 has snap manual focus, so if you zone focus this one is a no brainer, provided the focal length works for you.

sort of like i did.. i bought my d7000 with an 18-200mm. i also purchased a 50mm and a 28mm lens.. so i took the 50 for one shoot and the 28 for another shoot.. and found that my street shooting was more suited with the 28.. hence my decision for a potential purchase of a 17mm m4/3

Ive been trying to decide between both of these lenses and while I love the 35mm (ff) view from everything I have read and seen the 25mm f/1.4 is simply a better lens no matter how you look at it. It seems the 17mm is soft wide open on almost all copies and Id be hard pressed to spend that kind of money on a lens you cant shoot wide open. For those reasons Im grabbing the 50mm for my next lens and will wait to see if the copies of the 17mm get better.

Thanks for the info. I prefer a wide field of view... so Olympus 17mm f1.8 will be my choice.

Thanks for your opinion. I prefer one good lens instead of two medium lenses.

The 20mm f/1.7 is surprisingly good. So good that people compare it favorably to the 25mm Leica, and is probably superior to the Oly 17mm f/1.8 too (but with slower AF..). If you hesitate between those focal lengths, the 20mm is just in the middle, and has that perfect slightly wide but not too wide angle of view. Go for it, you wont be disappointed. And yes, with the savings get yourself an oly 45mm.

Or get the Sigma duo (19mm and 30mm) for $200 from B&H and use the savings for whatever you please! They are both excellent lenses for walking around and taking street shots.

Whoa! 20 1.7 is not a good lens? And also dissing the Oly 45? Seems your decision is done (good to get that out of the way), but this not how I see it. 20 + sneaking up on the 45 sounded like an excellent idea to me. I really enjoy my 20. Cheaper, 1 cm shorter, absolutely no quality issues in my view. You appear to be maybe measuring by price, but these are great bargains in a world where there's wide variation in value / price.

+1 on 20 + 45 option/
