Getting old or...

If i select a part of a picture and then make it a new adjustment layer (levels, curves whatever) then i can adjust it as i want - fine, however, how do i adjust one layer only without affectiong the layer below?? Totally lost here

Lets say i make a selection of background layer and put it as a new layer with Command J, how can i now adjust this layer without affecting bottom layer...

Feel really stupid now as i must have done this thousand times already

Cheers in advance

thanks, this I know ; )

I was more thinking about eg. say that I cut a hat from a picture and put it up on a new layer in order to resize it or tilt it. Once it is on a new layer and I have free transformed it, how can I now adjust say color or contrast on this? I know that I can press control L and get levels up and adjust, but how can I change say color on this specific layer content (the resized hat eg) without affecting the background layer?

hope you understand my question ; )

If I'm on the right page now, when you have the selection on it's own layer and active or you can have the selection (marching ants) visible without copying it to a new layer, hold down the Ctrl key and select curves or levels or... This will bring up the adjustment screen and any moves made will only effect the selection as the adjustment layer is now link to the selection only. Again, the selection or copy must be active.

Alternately, when bringing up an adjustment layer, hold down the Alt key prior to selecting and this will bring up a dialogue box which allows you to chose the blend mode, name, etc. but importantly, a check-box 'Use Previous Layer To Create Clipping Mask'. With this checked, the adjustment layer is linked to the layer below only.

HTH.
