Is there a 24-70mm Nikon lens in the pipeline?

Its rather unlikely.

I'd expect the next 24-70 at around the D5 release... So say 2015 or so

most of the f2.8 zooms are roughly on an 8 year life cycle

it's certainly a possibility but other than VR is the Tamron truly better? What about AF speed/accuracy, that is by far most important to me.
And not optics?

Yes important but I'd give up a slight corner sharpness for faster/better AF performance. Getting the shot is more important than absolute sharpness across every spot in the frame. I also find that VC is not nearly as essential when you're nailing the shot right-on with a quick AF, recomposing then taking the next shot similarly.

Unfortunately it is not so easy, nobody has yet developed software capable of curing field of focus curvature.

Distortion can be straightened with one button click though.

They will come out with a 24-70 f/2.8 VR this year or early next year. It just makes too much sense not to do it as it would leave them looking very good compared to the mess Canon just made with their 24-70 lenses.
Canon's released the best 24-70 (f2.8) on the market and Nikon's 24-70, just a tad less sharp wide open, is the best value on the market at $400 cheaper ("value" being used here in its true sense rather than a euphemism for cheap azz crap). So, I don't see any need for updates any time soon.

You never know a f2.8 with vr and hefty price tag as well; wouldn't be surprised to see a Nikon 24-70 F4 AFS VR

Agree Nikon's priority should be to update the ancient 300 F4 AFS and 80-400 AF lens.

We could see a 24-70 F4 AFS VR version..

Haha, yeah, Tamron is a real threat and market leader in things like this.

Get a Tamron if VR is important. Get a 24-70G is IQ is important.

There's not even a VR yet, so are they going to release three versions in one year, or just skip a few?

"24-70mm f2.8 G"

"24-70mm f2.8 G VR"

"24-70mm f2.8 G VR" II

"24-70mm f2.8 G VR" III

Of the lenses in the Nikkor Holy Trinity it's the softest so I suspect that there is some pressure to update it...

And the 70-200mm f2.8 VR II has the worst focus breathing, so there is some pressure to update it. And the 14-24mm f2.8 has the worst flaring problem, so there is some pressure to update it.

Come on, the 24-70mm is the sharpest standard zoom if we don't count the new Canon. Sharpness is NOT a problem at all.

Also the Canon 24-70 f2.8 is 40% higher price as well.

The Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f2.8 is a relatively new lens, only introduced a few years ago. It replaced the 28-70mm f2.8, which did not have the AF-S motor.

You may see a number of new and updated lenses in the coming years, but a new 24-70mm f2.8 will not be one of them.

how would anyone here know and why would you believe them anyway and how long would you wait

and the 24-70 is a new lens and a classic

so NO, it's not going to happen

I would just go ahead and buy the 24-70 lens. It's a beautiful lens, particularly at the long end.

Personally i doubt that it's a priority for Nikon to update it, but even if they do you'll be waiting quite a time before it hits the market.
Agree with this 100%. If you need it now, buy it now. It's a fabulous lens that will continue to deliver awesome even after a new version comes out, whenever that might be.
