I'm very new to this type of camera, been playing around with it and love that I have to work for my images. I'm going to be shooting at a freinds grand opening party in a few weeks and would love to suprise him with some great photos. I have a good foundation in art and composition and some basic knowledge with exposure, mostly theory. Can someone please give me a few tips on some good exposure settings for a wedding or club type environment. Would realy like to capture people in motion. I will be using the kit lens 2.8 18-55 . I'm not sure if I should rely on the cameras flash or buy one and if someone can please recommend a flash that is affordable. I also have the Panasonic lx7 for backup in case I totally screw up. Lol. Thanks any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Totally respect photographers as fine artist. If Davinci had access to a camera you bet he would have been a photographer .............

Hi, glad you like your camera. In time to come you will soon realise the potential of the camera and what you can achieve with it.

First, try to stay away from internal flash. Set the camera to aperture priority mode. In photography, there are 3 important factors that affect the exposure.

1) Aperture(the F number)- Aperture is the amount of light let in. The smaller the F number, the more light, the smaller the depth of field(area in focus).

2) Shutter speed- the speed of taking the pictures. The faster the shutter speed, the lesser light let in as there is lesser time for light to enter. Fast shutter speed eliminates object movement.

3) ISO- this is the sensitivity towards light. The higher the ISO, the brighter the picture. Too...

3) ISO- this is the sensitivity towards light. The higher the ISO, the brighter the picture. Too high ISO causes noise( grainy pictures).

The X e1 has very good high ISO. Without a tripod aim to achieve a high shutter speed. So for both the night club and wedding, set the aperture to the smallest number. This would help you achieve bokeh( blur background) effect. In nightclub, ISO should be 800- 3200, or even 6400 with noise reduction high For weddings, in bright sunlight, ISO can range from 100-400. If its evening, let it go up to 800. In aperture mode, you set the aperture and the camera set the shutter speed for you.

Hope this helps and that I havent been treating you too much as a beginner.

No problem. Maybe you could post some samples when you have.
