Is a 10 bit monitor worth it?

I'm not a techie, but I purchased Asus PA246Q 24" LCD Monitor a couple of years ago as this type of monitor is IPS panel (not a regular LCD) which calibrates to very true colors with and expanded color range compared to a regular LCD. Link on Amazon

I looked at the specs and it is 10bit, runs fine on an older Dell with Win7 so I'm not sure about all the technical impediements to a 10 bit monitor. This one is also quite a bit more inexpensive than some other brands. I have been very satisfied with it, the colors are wonderful. You do need to calibrate and stay away from their pre-programmed modes.

Another thought for you.

OP is talking wide gamut monitors and you suggest a low gamut mediocre monitor with a overpriced built in barely upgradeable computer. Way to stay on topic.

The OP has indeed identified a monitor with a wide gamut as being his preference (PA241w) but has the OP acknowledged he knows what the significance of using a wide gamut monitor is? I don't think so unless I missed something in one of his few responses here.

Well, you get what you pay for. Go ahead and spend $1.25 on a monitor, but dont expect much.

Here is what I have gathered reading this forum and doing some more research.

1) Getting into full 10 bit workflow requires a few components to work together
a. Graphics card
b. OS
c. Graphics Software

2) Most applications today do not support 10 bit workflow except for latest from Adobe

3) A professional 10 bit graphics card is required, but does not have to be expensive

4) A nice monitor 10 bit wide gamut monitor will still look nicer than a poor monitor even on a NON 10 bit graphics card.

5) Some monitors may be due for an upgrade, so shop carefully.

6) Apple/iMac is not an answer for everything :)

Personally I will probably purchase the NEC PA241W-BK (or later) model for now and upgrade other components as time/money permits.

get MAC, get iMac and it will be your best purchase beside obviously camera in the next and previous 5 years. All respecting Pros are using it.
Wow...!

"All respecting pros" only makes sense if you're referring to a dominant submission requiring exterior power like a religion...or a cult.

Otherwise it should have read "respected pros".

...talk about a Freudian slip...
