I had opportunity to try Canon G3 today at The Photographic & Digital Imaging Show in Toronto. It seems to be a quite nice camera. I took about 30 pictures in 5 min. I was allowed to use my CompactFlash card. Lighting was very poor ( hallide lights just like in most warehouses). Lens had some finger prints on it.
It appear to focus much quicker than my A20. I was very imressed by it's
macro ability. I could take picture from less than 5 cm and it was sharp.
Camera feels right in hand. One can hold it securely with one hand only.

Grip feels much better than on G2. Flash seems to be powerfull enough despite it's tiny window.
5 min is not quite enough to examine it properly but I liked what I saw.
Edward.

Do you mean/think you tried out a production G3 camera? Any chance to show us your shots on the G3? Thanks! Yang

Camera had sticker "SAMPLE" on the bottom so it was not a production one. I had been told that camera will be available by the end of October. MSRP for the camera is Can$1299.

I don't think I should post the pictures as I forgot to ask for permission and would not want to get anybody in trouble. It was very kind of them to allow me to use my own card.
Pictures are quite good considering poor lighting and dirty lens.

All fine and good, but most of this is subjective and vague .... post the shots, I'm sure Canons' legal team is too busy to hunt you down:-)

Sorry Mike. I don't think it would be right to post the pictures. Canons' lawyers are no threat to me but the young Canon rep's job could be in jeopardy. This was a sample camera and the prodution model might be even better.

Actually, we have seen some sample shots on the G3 after Phil's link which were taken under the good lighting condition. Particularly, the portrait sample was extremely imressive, better than those with DSRL shown in the internet, thanks G3's new lens, perhaps.

But, another important point is accuracy of G3's AF. I think, you can at least tell us if you got any out-of-focus shots or not. Thanks!

"Sample" does not mean it's not a production camera. I'm only guessing, but if they didn't want people posting pics from that G3 they would not even let you put a CF card in there. Did the rep say you could not post any pics? Did the rep say he/she was just doing you a favour by letting you take pics with it? I wonder how many other visitors to the show have taken pics with the G3? Just curious.

I will be going to the show tomorrow, I will ask if they allow to publish the sample shot.

The AF issue is of key importance, so if you get the chance please could you post as many AF shots taken in as varied a way as possible?

I did not seen anybody else taking pictures. There were many people handling the camera. Perhaps camera will not take picture without the card - just guessing. I had to wait about 15 min for my turn to see it.

I told the rep that I like to see the pictures on the monitor or in print. He briefly looked at my CF card and loaded it in.I did not mention about posting picures on the internet as I did not thought about it then. Young, cultured fellow answered all my question as best as he could. I could tell that he was quite familiar with the camera. I asked him to change settings for different modes and he did very quickly every time.
I hope this helps.

I took 27 pictures. 2 were out of focus. Another 3 were blurry due to poor lighting. Out of 6 macro pictures 3 were out of focus. But I would not blame the camera. It was difficult to take macros with only overhead lights. I had to move camera in such a way as not to cast shadow on the subject (my watch). I have seen the sample pictures on Canon site and mine were not anywhere as good as Canon's.

I can say that focus is far more accurate and faster than on Nikon 5700(I can borrow one anytime) or Canon A20 (which I have). I am more familiar with Nikon as my brother has one and I took couple of hundred shots with it.

Geez, why am I not surprised at your lame excuse. Please, give us all a break.

Nobody is going to allow a nobody to snap 30 images on their own CF card and walk out ..... I think we are a little more intelligent than that.

Please post serious posts only. Give us a break.

Good idea. If they allow you to post the pictures I will free to post mine.

Perhaps if you would leave with them your drivers licence or other id they would allow you to take the camera outside and take some shots.

All my pictures were taken within a few feet from their booth. Not a very good theme for pictures.
Good luck.
Edward.

Edward, thanks for your feelings on the g3, please ignore Logopro .

there are people like him in every forum that believe just because they don't have it, it ain't so.

Mikey, RIGHT on...!

Logopro, it's true, i have lurked here for quite a while and can spot one a mile away, and yes YOUR it.

When I was looking at the G2, I brought one of my CF cards along and asked the salesperson if I could install it and take some pictures. I reasoned with him that it is quite difficult to evalute the quality of the pictures on the LCD display and that I wanted to be able to look at the sample images on my computer monitor.

This was at a Best Buy store here in TX. He let me do that, but the camera was chained to the display counter, so I could only shoot right there in that area. There was really NOTHING good to shoot. Either bright lights or darkness. I took about 15 pictures at just anything around, some with forced flash, others with auto flash, others with flash off. Basically there was not one good picture out of the bunch. But that did not deter me because I didn't blame the camera, it was just a very poor place to take sample pictures coupled with a customer not familiar with the camera.

So I can easily see where the originator of this thread would not want to publish the pictures. With you guys SO hungry to G3 pictures, this would be a very poor set of samples to start out with.

I bought the camera primarily because of this forum, Phil's excellent review and the many comments from people on this forum and NOT from evaluating pictures I took in the store.

you're right. I was aware of this problem and took both G1 and G2 to Photokina and wanted to shoot under the same subject under the lighting condition with G3. Unfortunately, I was'nt allowed to shoot with my CF due to pre-production camera. Actually, we all have seen some sample G3 shots under the best lighting condition (I have just printed out the portrait of the young lady in A4 format. It's contestless!). So, it's really not a big deal how someone would report about his bad G3 shots in the photoshop.
