The following composites are 9 images taken before, and then after, updating to the 1.01 firmware on the NEX-7. I took images with the 16mm, the 16mm+UWA, and Zeiss C Biogon *T 35mm/2.8.

Camera set to Aperture Priority, ISO100, RAW+JPG. These composites were made from the *RAW* images, unprocessed, exported from Lightroom and reduced in size. Composite is laid out this way:

16mm/2.8 16mm/5.6 16mm/10

UWA/2.8 UWA/5.6 UWA/10

CZ35/2.8 CZ35/5.6 CZ35/10

firmware 1.00

firmware 1.01

So it looks like the firmware update does affect the RAW output (and helps a lot!), but did not help with the RF lens. Still this lens can take really nice pictures (it is for sale BTW if you're interested!):

Indeed. It seems as though the Sony e-mounts are going to be excellent with this update (I knew Sony would update for new lenses anyway).

This will make the 10-18 f/4 an absolutely stellar wide-angle on this system.

Let's hope so. :)

To the OP, thanks for the comparison.

In these samples the bottom row with the updated firmware does not look a great deal different from the bottom row with the previous version of firmware, still going to need fixing in post processing.

Thanks for the test, OP! Very informative, indeed.

For those complaining about the lack of improvement in third-party UWA performance: the only way Sony can do magenta vignette corrections in RAW without having to analyze each image for color casts is to profile its native lenses and correct the photo accordingly based on reference casts. An in-camera solution will never work for any and all third-party UWA lenses. :)

Saw exactly the same thing when I was out in London this week (e.g. a great improvement with the 16+UWA). I think the FW update works exactly like the lens profiling on the Leica M9, which is why it doesn't work on the RF lenses. It persuaded me that the 10-18mm would be a decent investment!
