Since my D700 has no video capabilities, I'm a total noob when it comes to DSLR video. I did some research on ideal settings but pretty much every article/blog post pertains to Canon cameras. I was wondering if anyone has some good D800 resources in regards to shooting video or some input themselves. Ideal settings, etc? As far as I understand, you want shutter speed to be double frame rate...

Canon or Nikon the basics are the same.
For a so-called "film look" shoot at 24fps at 1/50 shutter speed 1080P
For a "news video" look use 30fps at 1/60 shutter speed. at 1080p

Use manual only, don't bother with the auto modes, especially avoid af-f.

Tripod recommended and don't get musical with the zoom, playing it like a trombone.

You need to get a loupe for the LCD if nothing else.

Great info, thanks! Are there color settings on the Nikon like Canon has? Wondering if I have to change anything like that in camera.

Color settings? I believe the picture controls have an effect but you want to shoot video flat if you're serious about it... I think Canon has a setting for that called "technicolor" mode and Nikon does not.

But you can do the same thing pretty much by setting up custom picture controls... Start with "neutral" and I turn down contrast and sharpening. Gives you much more latitude for post work.

Try this video at about 5.25 or so for some insight

Had to comment, thanks greatly for the simple explanation. My video improved nicely when I set the camera to 1/50 sec and took the plunge and started using Manual and not one of the camera's Auto settings. Of course, a tripod has always been part of the equation.

Loving the video capabilities of the D800...what a pleasant surprise!

Cheers, and thanks again!!!
