A question for those that may have both cameras. I have read a lot of good things about the 7D, and with the new firmware and affordable price would it have any advantage over the 1Dlll that I currently use for action and candid photography.

A few more pixels is appealing and the slight extra reach seems useful, but would I actually gain anything or just spend 1K needlessly. I have no real interest in video, so that is not as relevant as any benefits to stills.

Is the image quality as good as the 1Dlll and is the focusing as good?

All the gear.........No idea.

The 7D and 1D Mark III, are pretty close image wise, with the 7D having more high noise throughout the iso range, and less forgiving files to work with in post processing. But the7d has a lot more pixels to work with which makes a difference if you need to crop heavily.

In my experience the Mark III is faster to focus than the 7D, and holds single point focus better with rapidly moving subjects, IF the photographer keeps focus points on the target.

I think the 7d proably tracks better using zone focus than the Mark III does with its all points surround focus option. The zone focus mode is really handy for birds against the sky, or baseball players and other subjects that can isolated from a background.

Both are a pleasure to use. If I could have only one, and I was shooting sports,or in challenging light I'd pick the Mark III. And if I was shooting primarily portraits I'd surely choose the Mark III. For general photography in decent light the 7d works just a well, gets you morepixels, and lighter weight.

very quiet shutter noise on the 7D.

Image noise is the most obvious downside, but if you have a noise removal program(suggestion: Topaz Labs DeNoise 5) it is manageable at all commonly used ISO values.

I have both cameras and prefer to shoot with the mkIII. Much less pp in my opinion. However, you have the video on the 7D. Both are super tools.
