That's needed to make up for the insanely high sales tax in California! So in the end it's nearly a push.
Umm, Paul, it's 6.25%, higher than Oregon, certainly, but not as high as Nevada, Rhode Island, Tennessee and a few others... Even compared to Oregon and Alaska, it's going to cost you $120 more in Cali, not $300, if you don't account for local sales taxes, which range as high as 3.25% in California, 7.5% in Alaska. For instance, here in San Diego, it's 7.75%, making the total sale tax $147.17.

um, here in L.A. it's 8.75% so that would be $219, or more than two thirds of the sale amount. But I guess I shouldn't complain, it used to be 9.75% in L.A.

California buyers who purchase online are legally required to pay the same tax rate in the form of a "use tax."

Sorry, Paul, didn't know you were in SoCal, too, forgot that detail, I guess. 9.75% is what I've heard NYC is, too, but just looked it up and it's 8.85%. Ours, down here in SD used to be 8.25, so it's not so startling when I pay LA's sales tax.

That aside, 8.75% of $1899 is $166.16, or more than 1/3 of the sale amount. Like someone else pointed out, technically we're supposed to be paying the going tax rate for out of state purchases, but I'm not sure how the State of California could enforce that without auditing either the books of every resident or every on-line reseller...

oh, and BTW, Las Vegas, Nevada (highest sales tax in Nevada) is still not higher than sales tax in L.A.
No, but it's higher than San Diego! ;-) So, what you're complaining about is the insanely high tax rate in LA, not in California, right? ;-)

Thank you municipal workers. The teachers don't teach, the cops eat donuts, the firemen workout all day, and we the suckers pay for them to retire at fifty with full benefits for the rest of there lives. It's called redistribution (stealing) of monies hard working people make to give to people who just want it.

And all this because I mentioned a possible price drop on 5D2...wow... ;-)

Only good if it's tax free, otherwise it would be $2014 in CT (6% of tax) where I live.

The 5D2 best price from all major stores still in last holiday season. I bought 5D2 combo deal from Adoroma with 50/1.8 lens, extra Canon LP-E6 battery, Sandisk 16GB CF card and Adoroma shoulder camera bag at $2100 with free tax and shipping. After I sold all bonus items, my 5D2 body costs only about $1850.

I predict 5D2 price will drop soon after Nikon announces D600 at $2K or below (that looks real). Also 5D3 in Amazon just dropped to $3400, and hope to $3000 in the holiday season (maybe with lens double discount).

Frys.com has the 5D2 for $1899 body only, with 24-105 f4 IS it's $2499, in store only, which pretty much limits it to California and AZ...I think...
But that reflects a $300 drop.
(They've got the 5D3 for $3484...heheheh...)

If they are still available via the loyalty program .. i think they were running around $1400 for the reburbs.

and they are currently IN STOCK on canon usa's refurb list for $1,759.20 without loyalty discount.

which is new, they weren't there last week.

24-105L is also in stock .. and you can add that for 20% off the refurb price .. so 720 for 24-105L to go with it .. all in 2100 bucks for a nice kit :)
