Ok, July, full moon just about upon us. Get your gear out and snap away and post a single shot here.

The reason I won't have a full moon totally is down to the inclement weather due to hit us over the next 4 days, so this partial shot is here to whet your appetite.

I have to say too, I have tried moon shots for years with the Uzi, the SP570UZ, and not tasted great success. Out comes the E500 and the newly acquired 70-300 and voila. C&C welcome.

Not a bad first effort Thane, but my suggestions for improvement based on the EXIF in the shot:
  • ISO 100 (the E-500's best results are at this ISO)
  • F8 - F10 (F14 is overkill)
  • manual focus if your eyes are good - in fact you shou be able to set the fous to infinity and leave it
  • dial in -.3 EV and spot meter on the moon (your shot is over exposed)
Also, the best moon shots are usuallty those when the moon isn't full as you get some interesting shadow effects at the edge. Give it a try and post the results.

I think Mario's comments are on or near the money. I've tried a couple of times with the same 70-300mm lens and an e-520. This 100% crop is about the best I've got (I still have some reservations about sharpness. )

I think you can see enough of the exif to see what I used. I found that with the crescent rather than full moon, and in spot-metering mode, I had to drop the exposure by 2.7, two stops more than Mario's recommendation (which would probably be right for the near full moon.) Another one a couple of days later with -2.3 looked a bit over-bright at the left edge.

Good luck when the weather clears in Aotearoa...

Rick

I don't like a white moon. Not that it's not a good image but I prefer the nice bright yellow moon. You know, when it's just coming over the horizon. What say you?

Very nice take especially using a E-500 where youu don't have the luxury of winding up the ISO.

Thanks Mario. I did try ISO100 later and lower Fstop but handheld (was too cold to dally with tripod again) to no great effect. But if the skies are polite I will try again.

Thanks Rick. Ever evolving process for me, learning the E500. Your shot is spectacular.

Good point!! I guess the Moon at any aspect is always a target for photographers, be it yellow, gray, brown or white. I think the best for me is higher elevation as lest moisture in the atmosphere distortion is less prevalent. But yeah, I do admire a good yellow moon. Here we rely on bushfires in Aussie for interesting atmospheric conditions and it's the wrong time of year for that phenomenon.

Thanks Col, but as Mario rightly stated, it could be better. If opportunity allows, I will try for better.

Thane,

FWIW I think Mario is 100% correct when it comes to ISO 100 for moon shots, day or night.
MF is best also, although you can get away with AF for daytime moon shots.
Best results are always when camera is tripod mounted.
Nightime I use 1/125 SS plus aperture between f8-f11 max.

Just picked up a copy of the OM 500mm f8 Mirror lens and was trying it out.

Both with the E-5, ISO 100 1/160, tripod, 8 sec anti shock delay, live view focus

Uncropped, 1000mm EFL

Uncropped with EC 14 TC, 1400mm EFL

(Doesn't seem too bad for something that looks and feels like a small soup can attached to your camera)

Same set up as before, + OM 1.4TC, EFL 980mm, cropped by about 50%.

(Quite a bit more detail with the 350)

haven't read the other comments - but I'm sure its been mentioned that you needn't use a high ISO setting - nor a very fast shutter speed, or a narrow aperture. I find spot metering and under-exposure by anything from -0.7 to -2.0 works wonders. Anyway - give a go next time - the telephoto at 300mm is plenty and the E500 will easily match anything those 'pesky' ultrazoom compacts can do :-D

...but I use the AF and trust it. I don't know if you focused manually or not, but the image looks out of focus and overexposed. Also, maybe it is better to set sunny WB manually and not use AWB since it is a bit difficult for the camera in this case to calculate the temperature. Here is my latest one:

OK, here's my attempt from 3 weeks ago. Reposted from Micro-4/3 at that time...

Used some sharpening and resizing as recommended in the other forum. I know there is CA on the top and I haven't tried to remove it.

FWIW this was taken at dusk with a sky that still showed some blue. I adjusted to get the black background.

Camera: E-M5
Lens: 50-200mm Zuiko 4/3 mk1 & EC-14 1.4x tele converter
Adapter: MMF-3
Settings: 200 ISO, F4, 1/400, 283mm & Digital Teleconverter (E-M5)
(I think this combines to an imperfect 566mm )
