So i finally went out today just to shoot HDR, it's really the first time i really give it a shot, and of course i used the 7 bracket exposure from the MarkIII for that, it's very convenient needless to say. I ended up saving it under my C3 so it's easy to access when i feel the scene might need it. I still don't have too much experience with HDR so any CC will be appreciated.

thank you in advance

Very nice...

I know you are freaking the the fans of overcooked HDR images right now but I was done with them after the first couple of images.

Does the camera take multi exposures to do this or is it a single frame developed multiple times and blended?

Your images look very nice. Thanks for sharing.

There are 2 ways to take HDR photos on the 5D3. The first is to use the built-in HDR functionality to take and process the images in-camera and the other is to just take the images using continuous with adjusted EV and do the combination on the computer. Clearly what you did was the second (because I believe there is no way to store the in-camera processing settings to a custom button and because you can only take 3 images with the in-camera processing). Some questions:

1) Were these images hand-held or tripod? and
2) What software did you use to combine them?

Thanks.

Is this in camera HDR? If so, which HDR Setting did you use? It looks a bit more than Artful Standard??

As I mentioned in my comment it does not seem like it could be in-camera. The OP said that it was 7 shot HDR and in-camera can only do 3 and the OP said that she stored these settings in C3 and in-camera HDR cannot be stored in custom buttons (although I don't know why Canon did that). Also it has been my experience that the in-camera HDR settings for the 5D3 all look a bit over-cooked.

I asked in my post which computer software she used for the HDR shots. They all look very nice.

Hi everyone. Thank you for your comments.

First of all i have never been a fan of HDR in the past only because of the over cooked look you see really everywhere on the net. The last few time I tried I was getting this look as well and I was just a pain to capture them.

By shooting ETTR as i have been doing for years now I could kind of do it by pushing the shadows up if I needed as there is more information for them this way.

I have been following 500px for a few months now and I did stumble on some very nice HDR, where I did not find those over cooked and actually found those images very pleasing considering the dynamic range it had to deal with. So because of this reason I am trying to find my own style I guess

My goal is not to start shooting HDR only but to have this as a working option when you need it.
  • So I have used a tripod for those shots
  • All of those images were 7 shots auto bracketed by the 5D3 (much easier than my previous camera where you could do only 3)
  • I used Photomatix to merge those images (Lightroom plugin). I am just excited to see that you don't really need to have those crazy Halos everywhere to do some HDR.
As a last note. I did try the in camera HDR and the result is just not that great and as soon as I saw it was saved as a JEPG I knew I would never use this.

Again thank you for the comments.
