Where to buy LI-90B battery for the TG-1?

I've had the TG-1 for a few days now (from Best Buy) and like it a lot. However, I am not able to find any spare LI-90B batteries for this camera. I ordered a few LI-50B batteries hoping that they fit but.. it would feel more comfortable using the correct battery. I just got off the phone with Olympus USA and the guy on the phone could not even find them on his list..

Has anyone had any luck finding spare LI-90B batteries yet?

So I guess it's fair to assume that everyone is in the same boat - floating around with a single battery?

I just called Olympus at 1-888-553-4448. After listening to several "layers" of their auto-answering system and pressing "2" several times, I finally got to a queue for a live person. Then their phone system promptly disconnected me. My email inquiry to them remains unanswered.

I am starting to wander if I made a smart choice buying their wares..

Just got through to Olympus tech support - they say the LI-50B will not work in the TG-1. Then I finally got through to their store - those folks informed me that the LI-90B battery will be available in mid-July(!).

Quite pathetic of Olympus, I think.

Well, it seems I am talking to myself here..

The LI-50B works fine in the TG-1. The battery is thinner but other dims are the same. To make it sit snugly in the compartment, I added self adhesive felt to one side and it fits like a charm.

That's good to know.

Olympus is sourcing these batteries from Sony, like anybody else. So I expect you'll find your larger LI-90B battery disguised in Sony, Pentax, Ricoh wrappings, if you look closer.

This is what I wrote in the Accessory thread for the XZ-1 :

"It seems the Olympus LI-50B battery (3.7V, 925mAh, 3.5Wh) is manufactured by Sony and identical to the Pentax D-LI92 and Ricoh DB-100. This means you could get an original charger also from Pentax or Ricoh to charge the original battery for your Olympus XZ-1."

VERY good news... because it just may be that the LI-50B will fit in the upcoming XZ-2, which will probably come with your LI-90B. Thanks so much for testing this!

Now, forgive an Irish-American's terminally stupid question, but does it go the other way? can you put a LI-90B in an XZ-1, or SZ, or any of the other small Olympus cameras that came with LI-50Bs? Without forcing it, of course...

Adorama listed the price as $39.

Here is part of the email I received from Olympus support today...

I checked with the Olympus store personnel.

They informed me the Li-90B battery should be available on our store by month's end.

The store added this today. Here is a link to the Li-90B (You can access it directly to check for availability) https://us.buyolympus.com/accessories/lithium-ion-rechargeable-battery-li-90b.htm
In regards to your question concerning an external charger.

At this point the camera comes with the F-3AC for use with a wall outlet. Using that the battery is charged within the camera. I will ask product management if there are any plans to have an external charger for the Li-90B and let you know. /

I was disappointed when I realized that the battery had to be charged inside the camera. The TG-1 is my second Olympus Waterproof camera, the first being a 1030 SW. (now in possession of my son) I also don't like the current mini charger that uses the same usb cable needed to transfer pics to the computer.

I would like an external charger!

It might be feasible to modify a LI-50B to hold a LI-90B battery.

http://www.amazon.com/CTA-MR-LI50B-Battery-Charger-Olympus/dp/B001DEN4GO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1339907848&sr=8-1&keywords=charger+for+LI-90B

It might be necessary to use a sharp utility knife or dremel tool to remove some plastic to allow for the extra thickness. Then, the battery might need to be held in place with a velcro strap -- attach small pieces with the sticky backing to the sides of the charger and then wrap velcro with the opposing surface over the battery and cut to be the correct length to mate with the pads glued to each side.

Since the contracts and the voltages are the same, there should be no risk of overcharging or fire -- by monitor on the first use in a safe location

The default USB charging allows you to charge the camera at charging stations in airports, libraries, and most anywhere you can get to a primary USB port on a desktop computer -- such as at many motels. Since the camera is designed to "travel", this makes perfect sense. What is missing is the ability to charge from the 12 VDC outlet in a car.

Do you have the link to the order page? I don't find the UC-90 at this page:

http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1621&page=accessories
I don't think the UC-90 is widely distributed yet - the TG-1 and accessories was launched worldwide just a couple of days ago. Best source of information, should be to give Olympus a direct call.

At the moment, eBay seems to be the only source for us in Europe, however with an expensive shipping cost from Japan: "Olympus Lithium ion battery charger UC-90 for LI-90B"
