Sony's answer to large sensor compact

I'm really happy they didn't try to cram a nearly useless and make-things-bulkier viewfinder into a camera that clearly doesn't need one.

If you want a viewfinder - there's a bazillion larger cameras you can choose from.
Viewfinder would have made camera bulkier , in other words , it would defeat the purpose of the camera which is to be as small as possible.
Canon G1X has a viewfinder , some might argue.
Ok. But its a pretty small one and many claim it is useless.

Maybe the sony could have a hotshoe to attach viewfinder has the GF1 has.

That would make more sense but even in that case camera maybe would have been bulkier which would be disadvantage.
The much acclaimed Canon S95.., S100 have no viewfinder , either.

"useless" LOL. I've shot some with the G1X and found the viewfinder very useful. I composed every one of my test shots with the viewfinder. The very fact it has one is the main reason I'd choose it over this Sony.

Me too.

I think those who are so quick to dismiss an OVF should realize that there are a lot of people who value them, even to the extent of making the camera slightly larger.

It's an argument that will never be settled, some like a OVF like the one on the G1X and others don't need it. There's no right or wrong here.

I do not believe the RX100 competes with the G1X. It is the S100 that Sony is after. Maybe the NEX competes with the G1X. I agree that an eye-level VF is nice but there is no room on S100, RX100 for VF.

It doesn't really matter to me how good the LCD is when taking the shot. If I can't bring the camera to my eye or use an articulating LCD to shoot from the hip then it's of little use to me. I can just about cope with using my iPod to take a snap to upload to FB, but I can never go back to holding a real camera out in front of my face
