serif. what do people think of it please? got it free

I assume you're talking about the Photo editing product, as Serif makes lots of different products.

I got it for free too, the X4 version, after a rebate. In short, I would put it in the same category as Corel PSP, its very close to Photoshop in capability, but falls short in a few areas. I find it runs certain adjustments faster than Corel, so I like that part of it, but it has a few quirks that just don't make any sense. For example, in unsharp mask you are used to seeing a checkbox for "display on image" so you can toggle your change on/off, well it doesn't have that. But, it has it for many of the other operations that aren't as commonly used as unsharp mask, so go figure. The workaround for that is a strange A/B window where you can move a slider over the image and see before/after effects on each side of the slider. Also, I can't seem to find a way to pick a random zoom size, like say 41%. It seems to offer 25%, 33%, 50%, etc. but that's all. I think there might be a 'fit to page' kind of option too, but don't remember.

So it has the potential to be better than Corel, and very close to Photoshop, but a few little quirks prevents it from actually getting there. Not sure if the X5 version has addressed either of the issues above or not, I haven't tried it. But I do like the program a lot for what it offers. I think I like it a bit better than Corel, but its not a clear winner just yet.

I haven't used PS elements in years, so I can't comment on how it compares to that.

I believe Serif Photo Plus is wonderful for beginners - because of the excellent quality of their manual and their other documentation and tutorials. In my eyes they are the best.
Otherwise Serif PhotoPlus is mostly in the class of PSP.
