I am on a 4 month backpacking trip around europe, and I got my nex7 two days before I left, I love the camera, its taking some great shots, people are always asking about it yarda yards, perfect travel camera.

BUT, in the 3 months, the rubber grip has started to get soft, as if its starting to disintegrate, and the glue holding it onto the camera has started to let go, so its starting to peel away.

I have used nikons all my life, the nex7 has been treated like a god, and always stored safe, but I have never seen this with my other slr gear, I have 1 month left on this trip and I am sure it will be completely off by then.

Definatly a warranty job, but has anyone else had / seen this ?

Thanks,

Cameron

Mine is only a couple of weeks old so I can't comment yet on the rubber grip problem you are having. Sorry to hear you are having a problem with yours.

Your post did prompt me to put my Gariz case back on my NEX 7 and leave it on.

I have had rubber grip problems with my last 3 Nikons - had to replace the rubber grip twice on my D300 in less than 2 years once on my D200 in 2 years.

I ended up buying a rubber grip replacement kit to keep on hand if needed for my Nikons. They are actually very east to replace - at least on the Nikon bodies I had.

I have wondered about the grip on the Nex 7 myself - your post will keep me monitoring the user groups to see if I need to track down a spare rubber grip to keep on hand..

I remember reading a post about this just a few days ago. You should do a search. I believe he sent it in for repair, but don't remember the details...

I've had mine since December. I've shot about 2000 frames with it so far, in a variety of conditions. The grip is fine on mine. I'd say you should send yours in for under-warranty service. Sounds like something wrong with that batch of grips.

similar age, about 4 months old N7, over 8k shoots; about month
ago it started to peel off at the bottom; from that tucked fragment
closest to the lens mount - I gave it a drop of neoprene glue and so
far the process was arrested; what is your SN? mine starts from 0641...

I had the same issue. I called technical support for repair and they sent me a fedex mailing label. They did a good job, i think they replaced the whole back area, so the back part looked brand new when it came back. Had it back within a week.

Mine started peeling a couple of weeks after I got it. It was only the one corner so I decided to leave it to see how it went. I noticed now that it's starting to peel at four different places. I'm going to have get Sony to repair this. I'm not sure if this is a common problem but it's clearly not acceptable for a camera of this calibre.

Perhaps they rushed the build to get them out of the factory after the delays caused by the flooding in Thailand

Be interested to know how many others have had the same problem.

Just started peeling up on me at 7500 shots

I agree. I've had mine for 1/2 a year and taken thousands of shots and grip is still perfectly fine.

If you're worried or want extra protection, consider getting a half-case.

My grip is pealing too, I never had any issues with my Canon DSLR's and I'm not doing anything different, seems like a weak design to me.

my grip is still like new. i dont know what you guys do with your NEX-7
I wonder if the others having issues are also like me, I don't use a strap at all, so when I'm using my camera, or have it with me its being held the entire time.

Yep, six months in and the rubber hand grip is peeling off on my Nex 7. Very poor show for an expensive camera.

I've had several Canon cameras for years and never this issue with their grips.

Mine is in a case, when not holding it. But even if you are holding it the whole time, it shouldn't matter? That's what cameras are built for. Especially small cameras like this, which many users probably hand hold in urban areas.

This is a pretty common problem with the NEX-7.

Sony replaced mine free of charge in 2 working days (in Japan). They didn't just glue it back on, but swap in a new part.

I HOPE they've resolved the issue now... but your camera worries me. Sony surely would have been aware of this issue when yours was manufactured.

I had the same issue..sent it to Texas under warranty. Here is my experience

Well Texas Sony support wins.

I have a scratch on the body now, so I reckon I'll peel the grip off and send it in for repair. (kidding)
