F717 and F*-77 are already announced...

What else?
  • A 5MP version of S85? (S90 or S95)?
  • A 5MP version of P9?
  • A 5MP versoin of CD400?
  • How about longer zoom cameras to compete with the high-end long-zooms from Minolta/Nikon and the mid-range Olympus/HP?
  • Is Sony not interested in the interchangeable lens world?
  • Should they offer CF II/Microdrive options until higher capacity MemorySticks hit the stores?
  • Any other surprises?

  • A 5MP version of S85? (S90 or S95)?
I'm sure lots of folks wish it.
  • A 5MP version of P9?
Would people buy it? With a 2, 3, and 4MP, might as well complete the line-u.
  • A 5MP versoin of CD400?
Heheheh... the CD-based camera is here to stay. Sony has a unique one here.
  • How about longer zoom cameras to compete with the high-end
long-zooms from Minolta/Nikon and the mid-range Olympus/HP?
That would be a surprise.
  • Is Sony not interested in the interchangeable lens world?
Never have been.
  • Should they offer CF II/Microdrive options until higher capacity
MemorySticks hit the stores?
You don't seriously mean that one. :-)
  • Any other surprises?
Sony always has surprises.

  • Is Sony not interested in the interchangeable lens world?
No. That's a HUGE gamble - Sony will never do that. I assume you're talking about a camera similar to the much hyped "OlyDak" vaporware being discussed furiously on other DPReview forums. It's also slightly outside of the prosumer market, yet not quite a full step inside the pro market. Sony's out to make money - don't forget that!
  • Should they offer CF II/Microdrive options until higher capacity
MemorySticks hit the stores?
Very doubtful. Why would they do that? It's much more likely they'll announce more accurate release dates on the 256, 512, and maybe 1G sticks.

If they don't have a replacement for the CD1000 they will have to answer to me personally! (note the new Oly 10X zoom with 3X optical - will Sony let Oly and others pass them by - I doubt it)

  • A 5MP version of S85? (S90 or S95)?
Definitely. I hope Sony won't screw up this one like Canon G3, which the rumor said it is still a 4MP camera.
  • A 5MP version of P9?
Eventually we will see a 5MP in this P series. However, I doubt people will consider a high MP camera in this type of P&S camera.
  • A 5MP versoin of CD400?
I don't care about this type of CDRW camera. When flash memory price dropping to an affordable level (which has been the case for CF/SD/SM, except MS), we will kiss this kind of camera goodbye.
  • How about longer zoom cameras to compete with the high-end
long-zooms from Minolta/Nikon and the mid-range Olympus/HP?
This will be the F909 in next year.
  • Is Sony not interested in the interchangeable lens world?
Sony will only concentrate on the mass market at this moment. This niche market requires a lot of up front cost.
  • Should they offer CF II/Microdrive options until higher capacity
MemorySticks hit the stores?
This is something they should have done even before they designed the memory stick. What a good (should have said BAD) example of proprietary format. Look at SD, introduced several years later than MS and we can buy 512MB already. I think there is no technical problem with MS, Sony just want you to spend money to buy 2 or 3 or even 4 128MB MS, and then they will introduce the 256MB, and wait until you buy 2 or 3 or even 4 256MB MS, then they will introduce the 512MB, ... They are in a business to make money, we cannot blame them, as we customers spend our money to buy their camera instead of other brands.

Just some notes:

I think a 5MP in a P series wont be a good alternative, since there’s some complains about the quality of P9 pics and it’s “only” a 4MP camera.
A 5MP release is more realistic in an S/CD series.

Maybe we are presented with a new flash, to use in conjunction with the F717 hot shoe.

Don’t think Sony is going to add other option regarding the storage media (why Sony didn’t launched a mini disk camera??)

That’s all.

Sonys tooting their own horn this year.

They have cancelled their showing of the annual Comdex Show in LostWages in November 2002 and Sony is doing their own thing now and their big trade show will be called Sony's Dream World, will happen this weekend in Yokohama City Japan. (Sept 13th to the 15th)

What they show here will be shown at Photokina. If Dream World becomes a success then this will be Sony's pnly participated trade show from now on. They will be takng this on the road to different locations around the world.

a little birdy whispered this info to me.

Actually, they did in 1997 (see digicamhistory.com for 1997).

...the latest in what is expected to be a string of new product announcements over the next two weeks as Sony's Dream World exhibition approaches. The free event, which will take place in Yokohama, Japan, on September 14 and 15, is open to the public and will highlight the entire range of products from Sony, from consumer electronics and computing products to life insurance, movies, and electronic money.

The MD holds about 140MB, whereas the 3-inch CD-R holds about 156MB. More importantly, anyone who has as CD reader in his PC can use the Sony CD-R cameras, but the MD cameras would require users to get something they don't have. I don't believe the MD cameras were sold in the U.S., and I don't believe they are sold in Japn anymore. My guess is that the future more likely lies with DVD technology - maybe even soon!

Hope so, will save about ten days of nail biting. But they'd better have a 10X zoom with IS on the way or they will feel my wrath!

Yeah, i wouldn't expect Sony to release any products with competitor memory cards.

But from a consumer perspective, I'm sure some owners of high-end Sony cameras like the 707/717 would find it very useful it they had a 512MB card available right when they bought the camera...

Agreed. They'll probably do it, but I don't know that anyone would want a 5MP camera in this type of package.

Now THAT would be nice. I'm sure it won't be a huge improvement over the F1000, but it would be great not to have to fiddle with the wire, and if it works as a BETTER flash, then that would be cool.

Sonys tooting their own horn this year.
What they're saying in effect is: "We don't need ANY of you guys!" with relation to the rest of the industry. That's a typical stance for Sony, but nowadays they have the muscle in digital imaging to back that up. It's not bluff anymore.

Interesting. I'd love to see this show. I wonder what satellite companies they'd invite to attend as supporters of their tech?
They will be takng this on the road to different
locations around the world.
I'd love to get to a show like that. Hope they bring it to the East Coast.

Hahahahahah... Roger, I really feel for you, my man. :-)

You been wishing for this for years like I've been wishing for other features in other Sony cameras. :)
Hope so, will save about ten days of nail biting. But they'd

If Sony offered products that also accepted CF cards, Memory Stick sales would plummet overnight. Nobody wants Memory Stick but Sony, and the only way they can push this overpriced and inferior format is by leveraging the popularity of their consumer electronics prducts.

Then again, you never know with Sony. MD is their baby and it's clear they'renot ready to abandon it yet. They are even selling PCs with built-in MD slots.

But for now, an MD camera makes little sense for anyone.

actually, Sony's kinda late. They are now following the footsteps of other defectors like Gateway, IBM, Dell and Intel from last years Comdex show.

What ever will become of the so prestigious Comdex show when the big guns won't come out and play is anyones guess now.
Interesting. I'd love to see this show. I wonder what satellite

I'd give my left ....shoe...hehe to go to this show. Where is Helen these days? Shes in japan. She should be our STF spy...lol
