M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 R (OM-D Thread)

Anyone have this lens? Any thoughts on how good it is optically?
I have one and like it. Very light and not bad optically at all. On a par with the full43 version. An absolutely no-brainer if you can get it in a double zoom kit/

I did a short blog review on it, not exhaustive but highlights that one of the best features is it is MSC - a video shooting lens - so very fast AF and silent too.

Hope that's useful.

150$? Olympus asks for 329 EUR (incl. VAT) here. No special offers with OM-D pre-orders either.

It's a great lens.

If you do not like it, you can sell it for about what you paid for it.

If you do like it, you will thank yourself for getting it at a great price.

Build is perfectly acceptable IMHO. No wobble and while some people think lightweight automatically means chintzy my arthritis definitely disagrees. Optically very good at the short end, at the long end stop down to 8 or at least 6.3. It's never a "magic" lens like the 43 50-200 or the oly m43 45, but a very solid and versatile performer.

Just to make your decision a little harder, if you've got the 45 already, which I strongly recommend, the oly 43 70-300 looks like it might do well with the EM5.

I agree. if you don't like it and decide to sell, you will not lose money on that lens if you buy it at $150.

As discussed on this site, the lens isn't at its best at 140mm, but when shot at 70mm to 130mm, it simply produces great shots.

Look at the subject isolation and pop you can get with this lens!

For a $99 to $150 dollars? No other manufacturer offer a lens of this quality in this focal length.

The pricing on this lens and the pricing on the E-PL1, and what you can do with the pair is truly a revolution in low cost digital photography. As little as four years ago, to get similar results as this combo, you had to spend three to four times the money, and you were lugging around a giganto DSLR.

You want to shoot this lens outside, in A priority mode with the aperture set as low as it can go. If you have room to operate you will get professional quality portrait shots.

Hmm - replaced mine (and the 14-42 II) R by the 14-150. It's just as good, just as compact and only slightly heavier. Never liked super zooms, but the 14-150 is a truly extraordinary super zoom. I use my µFT cameras mainly with primes, but to have this range in one lens on that level is really amazing. So, I'd opt for the 14-150 instead.

wait... isn't bokeh strictly a function of aperture???

No, bokeh is the quality of background blur.

Background blur is produced by focal length, distance to subject, AND aperture.
