I was shooting some scenics at Allegany State Park a couple days ago with my E-10 when I spotted this little guy...

Fortunately I keep the Uzi with the Tcon (1.4x teleconverter) mounted in the car for just these situations...

Ran to the car to get the Uzi and had enough time to get one shot...

Anyone know what kind of bird he is?

Bob

Not sure what kind of bird it is, but had to say congrats on a great shot! That Tcon 14B does a nice job. I just came home to a new Tcon 300 today! Looking forward to getting to use that soon on the E-10.

Regards,

John

Hello, the bird's official name is "American Goldfinch." Great picture of a male. They feed on thistle and other seeds. You were fortunate in having had the time to go get the camera and still get it
Will look at your other images as soon as I can.

As others have reported, the little yellow bird is an American Goldfinch. And yes, it it a "he". The "shes" don't show the bright yellow color, and when the seasons change toward winter, the guy's colors turn to a dusky olive color, the same as the lady's color the year around. The following link will tell you all kinds of things about him and his brothers and sisters, cousins, etc. If you have the usual sound stuff on your PC, the website will even play the finchs song, but you have to listen closely.

Now, for the plant that the bird likes so much. I think that I've read that gold finches like the fiber-like material from these as a prefered nest material. Where I live, you face a steep fine if you allow these to grow on your property. You can read about this one ait at the link noted below (but the link doesn't include audio of the plant singing). Goldfinches love these thistles, but farmers and stockmen don't. As plants go, they are pretty nasty, but they're not bad to look at (as your photo shows).

Thanks for the link, Rooski. I actually did try a couple of combos last night...E-10/Tcon 300/A-200 and E-10/Tcon 300/B300. Other than making my arms numb, I was pleasantly surprised with the ease of use.

I'm going to get out this weekend and do some cobo tests and see how it fares. I'll tell you right now, though...it really makes you appreciate the lightness of the 2100 / add-on lens combo + image stabilization! :-)

Now that's a lens combo...

For now I think I'll stick to the Uzi and Tcon for the long shots
and the E-10 for the closer scenics...easier on the arms... ;> )
