A77 & Kit Lens - Lens Problem?

I purchased the A77 kit a couple weeks ago and was quite happy. I then noticed a couple of hot pixels in the EVF and decided to return it to Amazon. I received the replacement kit. I tested the body with the 16-50MM lens from the original kit along with 2-3 other lenses I have. All seemed good.

Then I tested with the 16-50MM that came with the replacement lens kit. This is not so good. In the top LCD screen it displays 'Lens'. When attempting to press the shutter button, the display on the back shows, 'Check the lens attachment. If the lens is not supported, you can permit use of the lens in the custom menu'. The next thing I noticed is that when using the camera menu, it is very sluggish and the 4-way stick is not always responsive when navigating the menu. This is not the case with any of the other lenses attached. I then decided to do a factory reset on the camera. Same results.

The camera seems fine with all other lenses, including the original kit 16-50mm lens. I'm thinking there is a problem with this 16-50mm lens that came with the new replacement kit. Has anyone else seen this? I really don't want to have Amazon replace this again. They certainly won't until they get the first one back (already en-route to them). I really don't want to send a new ,never used lens back to Sony for 'repair'. Besides telling me I should have been happy with a couple of hot pixels, any other suggestions of something to try?

Thanks in advance!

A friend had this issue with a non-standard sigma lens. It worked mostly until he really needed to take a shot with as a rhino charged him... Check lens.. Doh!

Back at the shop they tried other sigma lenses, same thing popped up, so he got a Sony replacement and all was good.

When I first got my camera the 16-50 was out of stock so they lent me the older 18-50 - once the camera wouldnt take a shot but gave no specific error until I released/replaced the lens then it worked again.

Yes there is a menu over-ride to get past this problem (if your using non-standard lenses or connecting it to a tele/microscope etc) but not so good if the lens is not behaving properly. Probably a connector issue, clean the contacts and see if it improves.

So, the moral of this story is that Sony SUCKS as a customer service company. After a conversation with their support, they agreed the lens is defective. However, they want me to send it to them for repair under warranty. REPAIR, UNDER WARRANTY? I haven't used it yet. So, they escalated to a customer advisor. Same story. This is nuts. I haven't used it yet, it is a factory defect and they want to handle it as a warranty repair. What's wrong with this picture.

So, I turned to Amazon. IF it were still in stock, they'd replace it again even though the first defective unit hasn't made it to them just yet (it is in transit). However, since it is out of stock they are processing it as a refund. However, since it needs to be returned by the 15th of March, I can wait. If it comes into stock by then, they'll do a straight exchange. They will let me know, and they will send it to me overnight.

SO, Amazon again far exceeds the customer service of much of their competition AND the manufacturers.

Just disappointed I can't get a steady flow of use of this cameras. One has to wonder about quality control or my bad luck! :)

I had the same problem trying the a55 18-55 kit lens. Same error message. I removed and put it back on. About 10 times and it started working and still is. Sometimes when I zoom with it the LCD goes black for 2 or 3 seconds. All the other lenses are fine.

Good luck.

The first kit I had didn't exhibit this issue at all. I've already dismounted and reconnected the lens a few times. Since I'm not sending it away just yet I'll try as you suggest a few more times. I also wiped the contact the lens just in case.
