For what is is worth....

I was at Houston Camera today and was chatting with the salesman regarding the anticipated date that they were expecting to see the pre-ordered D800E bodies and his response was interesting. He said that he was pretty good friends with the area Nikon rep and when he asked him about the D800E ship date (apparently for himself as he mentioned 'employee sale'), the rep told him that it was going to be "interesting". He mentioned that the D3X was pretty hard to get a hold of when it first came out (his words, not mine) and that it represented approx. 10% of Nikon production. He said the D800E is forecasted to be closer to 1% of Nikon production and that it could easily be late 2012 early 2013 before non-NPS people get their hands on this model.

Does this sound realistic? Im in line for a D800 (non-e) but am anticipating "real world" reviews once it hits Photogs hands.

I find it hard to believe that the D3X represented 10% of Nikon's production even if it were stated as 10% of Nikon's pro body production. I could be wrong but I didn't think they made that many of them.

As for the shipping date on the D800E, well I was under the assumption that the first batch would ship in April. I hope that is the case.

Yeah, I hope so too. I don't recall the release of the D3(x/s) as I was shooting DX with no desire to go to FX. I now shoot with a D700 and have a D800 on pre-order. Funny how things change! LOL

I wanted to post this here to get some feedback from the masses as to its validity.

I'm on the D800e pre order list and am depressed all of a sudden... Please Nikon, let's ship these things soon!

I lived in Houston for the first 25 years of my life, and I realized at about age 25 that very few people there actually knew much about anything. I think the combination of pollution and heat / humidity / mold has rotted everyone's brain. I then began on finding a way out.

I still go back and see family a few times a year, but more and more, the folks who actually live there increasingly resemble the creatures from 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later. Especially at the shopping malls (food courts, in particular).

I'm pretty sure Houston is actually nothing more than a huge Government experiment to see how unhealthy and ignorant humans can be and still be able to breed. And that's why they put NASA there - as a front. Each year they slowly increase the amount of unhealthy factors.

Re the D800e - if you really want one, don't go through Houston Camera Exchange. You're going to have to go online if you want it in a timely manner. It's unfortunate because support local camera dealers is important for the local economy, however, Nikon's accounting doesn't give a rats behind about your local economy.

Alternatively, get a D800 and enjoy a wonderful camera until D800e supply numbers are better known (or, put in an order for one and just wait). Once the D800e is available, sell your D800 at a bit below cost (which you will have absolutely no issue doing. If you do, let me know and I'll find you a buyer in about 10 minutes).

I have an order in for both the D800 and the D800e. Ultimately, I'll end up selling one at a loss equivalent to the cost of a week long body rental. which is fine by me.
