Before High ISO digital...

I was thinking of posting something similar when I read all these complaints from people about not being happy with the high ISO capabilities of the new D800. Complaints about all the noise at 25,600 ISO. I look at these high ISO samples and I'm pretty blown away. Sometimes thinking back to days-gone-by helps put things in perspective. My past sports photography days started with film and included shooting TMAX-3200 and pushing it to 6400 (not quite as far back as the images you posted). I loved that film, and it was grainy as all heck (compared to today's standards). With a little bit of noise reduction, the high ISO of these new digital cameras is really amazing.

Wow... A Manx... Gee, I almost got one at one time, but did have the Cromwell and the glasses... :-)
Thanks for the memories :-)

:) Yes they were capable with their "antique" tools...
I don't understand the reason for the post.

These aren't your photos so I'm ok saying they are low IQ, noisy shots... from photographers who happened to be in the right place at the right time, who probably knew what they were doing. Which is what these shots are about.

I didn't realize anyone was trying to claim that people couldn't take sports photos in the old days.
Eh..

We also used to wear furs, live in caves and hit each other over the head with clubs.

What point are you actually trying to make?

They are not noisy they are beautifully grainy.
You're right. Been awhile since I shot film. They aren't noisy... they are grainy.
Terribly so.
I'm not saying that takes away from the recorded moment of the events.

But again, that was said when I thought you were trying to compare IQ with digital.
They didn't happen to be there they knew what they where doing.
They happened to be at the right event, at the right time.

You think the photographer had anything to do with the hockey player diving, or Ali raising his arms... etc, etc.
And this post is for the ones complaining about the newest state of the art pieces of technology, saying they are still not satisfied with the cameras available now.
Oh. Well maybe that would have made more sense... had you actually typed that originally.

Great shots but I'm confused.

Are you trying to say that the camera doesn't matter for taking beautiful stills regardless of high ISO capabilities or are you trying to justify people buying the d800 over the d700 because ISO isn't everything.

I can agree with the former but the later makes no sense as the images are great proof on why people don't really need either cameras....
