I have just sold my D700 for $1900, I think for another $1000, the video capability and the extra 24mp count is more than worth it.

What do you think?

I think I'll wait until the D800E arrives, do some side-by-side comparisons with the D700, and then decide whether to sell the D700. I expect it will hold its value well because there are lots of people who don't want more than 12 MP, and it is a superb camera.

2 days before the Japan earthquake! I anticipated Nikon would release these cameras many months ago. I have been "making do" with a D7000. The wonderful performance of the D7000 sensor convinces me the D800 will really be a stellar performer.
I can't wait.

Today I did a search on some user items market in my country and saw 5 or 6 D700 cameras selling between 1800€ and 2200€. Two sellers say that they want to get the D4, one wants to upgrade to D800 and the others aren't explaining why they're selling.

My country is a very small market for pro cameras but even so I expect many more D700's for sale in the following months.

This is good news for people like me who wanted to upgrade to FF, especially big markets like USA will be flooded with used D700's. The D700 is still a dream camera for aspiring photographers or enthusiastic amateurs, nothing has really changed with the arrival of the D800.

but I use two cameras, 5D2 and D3x. There's a lot of value in carrying two cameras. You got a great price for your D700 but I think that's going to change rapidly. I think the D700 will eventually trade in the same range as the 5D. Folks coming late to the dumping party and facing lower resale values may be better served by keeping their camera as a 2nd.

Good decision and I think you got a very good price. Sold mine last year while I expected D800 in April 2011. First it was delayed by the quake and a second planned release on Oct 26th was cancelled because of the floods in Thailand.

I was using a D7000 under while. Didn't regret for a second. D7000 at base iso is stunning, D800 even more stunning... :)

I like better one good picture in a day than 10 bad ones in a second..

I agree prices will be much better for the buyer in a few months. BY the same token, if prices get too low, the upgrading seller may be better served by keeping his D700 as a 2nd or backup.

I dunno though. The D800 is so cheap that many who are prone to using two cams will be able to buy 2 D800s outright.

I have no reason to sell my D700

I have no interest in video and the price of any replacement camera will only go down over time. My D700 will suit me fine

Number 1, the D700 is a great camera which excels at tasks like pj, where a 36mpix camera is more a liability than an asset (imagine getting back from an assignment with 350 nef's - common situation in reportage).

Number 2, the D700 merits are not to be obliterated by the D800. It will be a great backup body whose strengths by far exceed any resale value. If the latter drops, I might even contemplate to buy another D700.

Number 3, before jumping on the D800E, I will do my best to test it with my "working" lenses, since I suspect pixel pitch will put excessive pressure on some lenses I love to use (namely, 28mm f2.8 D and 35mm f2 D). After I understand what kind of lenses turnaround the D800 would require I will decide also on the D700.

Best regards,

M

Really ?

The couple PJs I know seem to use small sized JPGs for multiple reasons... speed of processing... plus if it's only going into newspapers or web pages... starting with RAW wouldn't even be noticeable.

I ordered the d800, but holding on to my d700 for now. I want to make sure the d800 is a workable camera for me before I make a selling decision on the the d700. However, if I was getting the d4, it would have forced me to sell the d700.

That's exatly what I'm doing. My D700 isn't going anywhere until I see the D800 perform better at high ISO's.

Certainly not selling my D700. No need to. It seems to me from reading these forums that people think it's the camera that takes the picture, but it's the photographer. I know that a good camera helps (I've got enough of them!) but it is really only part of the equation. The eye and the attitude is always more important than the machine--look at Robert Capa's photos of the D-Day landings. The images (those that survived the processing) are blurred and out of focus, but they still give me a chill when I look at them. Does anyone really care that he shot them with a Contax?
