I am looking for something to protect my S40 LCD screen. All advice welcome. -:)

Fogun:

I have a S40 that I recently equipped with a 'da mini protector for a trip to Europe.

The good:
  • not too expensive
  • protected the screen well
  • fits nicely
The bad:
  • it was impossible to use the LCD in bright sunlight with the mini protector. The S40 LCD isn't particularly good in bright sunlight anyway, but with the 'da mini protector on it was awful. Thank god the S40 has a viewfinder as well.
I will be removing it as soon as I can figure out how to take the damn thing off.

I have used it for more than half year & am very happy with it. It's very clear under sunlight as long as you have removed the original Canon LCD protector & cleaned up any dust on the LCD screen. The web site is:

http://www.daproducts.com/dpmini.htm

I ordered 2 of them and give one to my friend.

Perhaps I am missing something here? What original Canon LCD protector are you talking about? I don't see anything even remotely removable on my S40 LCD. Please advise.

One more thing - it was not clear in your reply. Do you use a S40?

Thanks for the advice. I know that in bright sunlight the LCD is not paticularly good. Is there anything else that can be used?

Some people have suggested using an adhesive covering that is marketed for Palm Pilot LCDs. Some of them are textured which is no good for a camera. I don't have any personal experience with that, but maybe it is something you can look at. There was a thread on this a while back - you might try doing a search. People were buying the covering from a place on-line called purple-moo or something like that.

I use a S30. It came with a thin film on the LCD. However, the film will peel off and become fuzzy after a while.

Well, that aint it. I took that film off the first day.

Maybe your LCD is brighter - seems unlikely, but my LCD (normally very bright) with the mini protector on was unusable in bright sunlight.

Naturally I cleaned both LCD and mini protector completely before applying. It has no scratches, film or anything like that.

Lucky you.

There are many people in this forum have used 'da mini product. Check the following threads yourself:

I use a PDA protector (Fellows brand). Make sure you get one made for color. Cut it so that it overlaps the metal edge so you won't get dust in the cracks around the LCD screen. These things are pretty tough and will prevent scratches from normal wear. Mine's been on 4 months and is still going strong. one 12 pack will last for 24 replacements. However, I've been using them on other devices too...(GPS, son's gameboy, sister's digicam...) The PDA protector route completely non-obtrusive and is effective for preventing the annoying odd scratch on the LCD that will come with normal use.

I agree 100% with mango. Get the clear Fellowes WriteRight for Compaq I-paq colour PDA's ($15 CDN at FutureShop). Cut them in fours - they fit exactly to the dimensions of the LCD screen. Do not get the ones for Palm Vx's etc since these are textured and obscure an already smallish screen.

Used just one so far... and it's still going strong.
