If you like the G1x, that is fine. But when some shots are available showing mediocre IQ, this is neither clueless, ignorant nor pointless. It is an indication that there might be issues with the G1X and only final samples will show whether Canon is going to fix that.

Yes, I agree, it is apparent from the few test shots that the severe edge/corner issues @ 30-40mm range are limited to close-focus scenarios. That's good to hear, as it makes it a lot easier to avoid unnacceptable results!

This looks pretty good to me. Not sure what's going on at short focus distances.

LOL. I'd really like to know by what measure these images are mediocre. What bothers me about people who make statements that are purely subjective is that some people looking for good information might not know better than to ignore them.

For example, there was a certain individual who made a statement that the lens was garbage because it was too slow. There was no convincing him that the aperture, while definitely a consideration, was not the only measure of a lens's quality. Sharpness, vignetting, flare, chromatic aberrations, color reproduction, image stabilization, and probably a few others that I can't think of right now are all criteria that aren't summed up by the focal length and max aperture.

Exaggerating the problems this or any other system has isn't useful. Making statements that are patently false makes me wonder what the motivation is behind them.

The closer something is, the narrower the depth of field. Focus accuracy may be a consideration in those shots, but if this is the case then waiting until the production cameras are tested will tell us if this is a real problem.

There are reasons why all manufacturers request that no reviews be made based on pre-production cameras.

This issue is something to look out for, but I think we need to wait a bit before we know if this issue is real, or not.

A little more patience, and a lot more civility is needed!
