Is a Fujifilm digital camera (Non-SLR) better than an equally priced camera of a different brand?

Very generic question.

It depends on the camera type.

In premium superzoom segment, X-S1 is alone while HS20, which is a lot cheaper than any competitors can offer, has the best price/performance ratio. HS20 will be replaced by HS30 and HS25.

In compact segment, X10 is the best if you will ignore the possible existence of ORBS in a shot.

In travel zoom segment, assuming Fuji fixed the lens de-centering issue in FXXX cameras, F770 is the camera to beat.

I was thinking something that costs and performs like the Canon G12. What is the equivalent Fujifilm camera?

That would of course be the X10. There is no way to say which is the "best" camera of these two. I have to second Kim Letkemans answer.

Read reviews, try them out, maybe return here with more specific questions to users of the cameras you are interested in. To me the manual zoom and fast lens of the X10 is vital to even consider a compact camera. And I enjoy Fujifilms EXR technology. But thats just me - its a great cam but that doesn't automatically make the X10 the best camera of its class. The X10 has flaws and limitations like any other camera.

That will be the X10 then. Both very good camera's , just read dpr's raw compact round up and you decide for yourself.

My criteria for my choice:
small package
good low light capability, fast lens, decent high ISO performance
choice of pop up or hot shoe flash
good ergonomics, and controls

Considered the Oly XZ1, Sony NEX5n, Oly EPL3, EP3, EPL2, Canon S100, Pany GX1, Nikon J1. And I got the X10.

Otherwise I would not be picking up a Lumix G3 tomorrow.

I was planning to quit micro four-thirds for the X10, but the performance in low light, plus the orbs, don't do it for me.

Of course if you really need lens interchangeability and extra resolution go for G3.

But the performance in low light is one top reason I'm loving my X10 (the portability another). G3 is saddled with an f/3.5-5.6 kit lens vs. the X10's f/2-2.8, around two stop gain. X10 even has an advanced "pro low light mode" that does wonders with ISO 3200.

You already got the answer X10 but it costs more.

The Nikon P7100 is a worthy alternative to the G12. It has longer lens, comparable image quality, and costs far less.

The F600 or F660 is much smaller than the G12, costs less, has longer lens, and offers RAW mode. Make sure you can return it after testing, because you have to be your own QA person with the F series.

It's worth remarking that the G12 will likely be replaced soon, using the same sensor as in the S100, so if you like the form-factor and design, you might want to wait.

Well I'm going for both. There are many conditions I like the X10, but any condition with strong direct lights at night or specular highlights are not among them.

When you have to stop down to ISO 3200 and put up with the resulting noise, to get rid of orbs, a fast lens and workarounds like Pro Low Light prove to be zero advantage.
