I have wanted to get a profile of our cat Winston for a long time. He does not sit still ever .. So I figured I would give my son the flash and we chased him around all over and finally got a shot i liked. I used the small diffuser card that came with the vivitar falsh, used on camera flash to fill ... ?? thoughts??

Perhaps try without the fill flash. Sometimes less is more. Or have your son stand closer to you (so the cat looks at you or him), and then have your son hold the flash out at arms length.

Rename the cat, he doesn't look like a Winston, LOL ! Seriously, I move around slowly, flash in one hand camera hanging from my neck strap. I shoot one handed and flash out to the side, the flash will generally freeze movement. Two people chasing the cat around he will never sit still.

But here is Winston, well our Winston:

top tip:

get a very expensive cat bed, put that in one corner of the room. This will act as the repellant.

set up a nice background (seamless if you have it), put a paper bag on it. set up your flash around the paper bag

within 1 minute the cat will be in the bag

Have fun!

I may have a go at that thank you

That is a wonderful shot! Am I right that you were holding the flash in your right hand?

lol .. that is great! Your right about the expensive cat bed being a repellant

You're lighting pattern is excellent. Weather intentional or not, it's much better than a lot of what I see from experienced photographers on here.

Two things to point out... I think the flash is SLIGHTLY hot on the right side of the face, maybe 1/3 or 1/2 stop. Not too important though, and it's very hard to be precise with this subject.

Secondly, the background looks like... well, like you didn't care what it was. If you had a nice BG, this shot could be something to frame.

Great job.

THANK YOU !!

You nailed it .. i had not a 2nd thought as to what was in the background lol ...I will have to work on that one ... still having a hard time trying to get it all together .. i think i am going to have to invest in a pocket wizard and a better flash when i can save up the money.

THANK YOU !!

No criticism, just advice. getting 'better' gear is not going to help now. You have more than enough, huge strides in 'quality' can be achieved without spending a dime.

It will cost you a little time though...
