I recommend buying a spare battery. We were in NYC for Christmas week visit. We were out and about from 8 am to midnight. I took a lot of pictures all day long, but the battery does not last. It dies by 1030pm. I think for the average person, it will last all day.

Yeah, I think a lot will come down to your shooting style. I'm still an old hold over from the days of traveling with film. When you only get so much to work with, you get very miserly with that shutter button. I find I only recharge every two or three weeks before I get nervous about getting caught out for the day without enough battery power that I charge it. We'll see how this coming week goes though. I'll charge mine tomorrow and won't get to charge it again until Thursday night when I get to where I'm staying in Sydney. I'll have a day of shooting on Tuesday and a day of shooting on Thursday. It'll be interesting to see if it survives that long.

For an average day at home, one battery is adequate. When on a dedicated vacation day when you will be shooting everything all day long, then we need a spare. I didn't even use much video. I wanted to but was afraid of battery drain.

I bought two batteries for $20. They work a treat.

Real battery drain will be for video where autofocus and the LCD are working hard.
That said, better get SD cards as well !!!

A Birth Certificate shows that we were born.
A Death Certificate shows that we died.
Pictures show that we lived!

Exactly, with all my cameras the first thing I did was to buy a spare battery, but with the J1, I was lucky, it was not available, and I say lucky because with the way I shoot, lasting several days at full load: I think mine has more energy than indicated.

Lol...late at night, the camera would say battery low, can't take a picture, and shut down. I had to turn off the camera, turn it on, take a shot and turn if off.

When I picked up my J1 I purchased an extra Nikon battery. I've noticed something interesting between the two – the battery that came with the camera appears to have less capacity.

I've only had the camera for 3 weeks so I can't consider this an exhaustive test, but I'm averaging around 300 photos and 5 to 10 minutes of video with the battery that came with the camera, and around 340-350 photos and the same amount of video with the extra battery.

I'm not trying to say that the batteries that ship with the camera have less capacity, there's always some level of variance between battery capacities. I haven't had the opportunity to charge and discharge the batteries frequently so these numbers are just some initial findings and may equal over a few charges.

The best I've gotten was during the third charge on the extra battery – 363 photos (no flash) and 24:32 minutes of video which does me just fine for a day of shooting.

But I agree, a second battery is a must with the J1.

Well I'm back from my trip. I charged my battery before I left. I was in Australia for three weeks and only charged my battery twice. Each time, the meter was only missing one bar. I even shot about 20 minutes of HD video on one of those charges in addition to my regular shooting. For my personal shooting style, it looks like one battery will work just fine. Again though, I started shooting in the film days so I'm thinking if I have the shot or not before even half pressing the shutter. YMMV.

You're right, while I ordered the FT-1 and 30~110mm, I also bought a spare battery... just for peace of mind, as I said, I am amazed with the batt. load.
