Hi all,

Here are a couple of pic's taken with my Hs20exr and im hoping you can give me some tips.

Im having real problems in dull light and moving animals with this camera too so any tips would be great also as i do tend to leave in exr most of the time.

Dull light and a moving subject is always going to be a challenge with a camera like the HS20 (or any other superzoom)

I would suggest setting your camera to 'M' size, turning noise reduction down to low and sticking to ISO 400 or lower as much as possible.

But definitely turn down noise reduction, if you haven't done so already you will notice much better detail and much less smearing.

I also shoot 90% of my pics in 'Astia' (soft) film mode, don't be fooled by the "soft" description, it doesn't affect sharpness but alters the contrast and adds a bit of 'depth' to the images. I found standard film mode is usually too 'flat', though it is still very useful in conditions when 'Astia' delivers too much contrast.

You need to get closer to the birds and watch your histogram. That first picture is overexposed. Expose to the whitest part of the bird. Ditto with the flower/bee macro, get closer. Use as low an iso as possible. The dog picture works because it is kind of sad. Might play with levels to enhance the look...maybe B&W or just desaturate the background...or just the dog.

Until you get use to your camera keep your shutter speed up a bit for the birds particularly those flapping around like those in your images. Unfortunately for that bird shot you did not have enough light - ISO 1600, SS=1/200 and F6.3. If that is your feeder then try again when you have a bit more light.

Apologies if my lack of photographic knowledge is catching.

Many thanks Daniel, Will give you settings a whirl and see what happens.

This picture even though it was taken in a dull day looked so much better in the flesh, Dissapointting a bit.

Thanks for all the replys, The first one was taken through a double glazed window which wasnt that clean though so that hopefully explains why its not that clear.

Yes it does!!

I tried the same thing and had to clean my window before I got anything close to satisfactory.

You got some good advice from HS20 owners. I do not own one but I know its images respond quite well to PP. This first shot is fantastic in content and it's certainly worth some of your time improving it in PP. I couldn't resist spending a few minutes on it just to see how it comes out. It is such a great shot despite all adverse conditions...
