LA-EA2 topic - please keep this one alive! Thank you :-)

Bump! please someone with the LA-EA2 adaptor post some vids :-)

Just found a new video of the Nex-5 with LA-EA2 + 55-200 SAM lens :)

I was under the impression that the firmware for the NEX-5 and NEX-3 for the LA-EA2 adaptor wasn't out yet, but the lens doesnt seem to be focussing to me...what do you think?

Three quick notes/reality checks:

1. You don't have to open the thread
2. You actually bumped it with your post
3. No one's going to stop posting because you threw a little fit

Hey Dennis,

I'm sorry if it bothers you that I'm trying to keep this topic alive.

Try to understand that it is really difficult to test technology in the area where I live in, and if I'm ordering this piece of kit it will cost me a lot of money that I have had to save up for quite some time.

Making a 1500euro investment into something I cannot test beforehand...it kind of scares me. As such I'd like to hear people's opinions, and preferably pictures+videos of how well it performs together.

Feel free to put me on ignore so you don't have to see this topic popup any longer.

And Nate Dogg, thanks for the backup! :)

True, but bumping causes it to displace some other thread in the "most recent threads" view, which is probably why there's a rule against deliberate bumping.
2. You actually bumped it with your post
Well yeah, any time someone posts to a thread, it gets bumped.
3. No one's going to stop posting because you threw a little fit
Sadly, you're probably right, despite the rules. But while it's unlikely that my objection will change anything, it's guaranteed that a lack of objection will change anything.

Anyway, it turned out productive after all, because I hadn't thought to simply put Deso on my ignore list until he suggested it. I assume his thread will still displace something else, but at least it shows up at the bottom out of the way.

I tested the adapter last night with my DT50/1.8. Wasn't very happy with the results; the lens seemed to be a little sluggish in locking focus. Switching quickly from a distance to a near object caused it to go crazy.

I have also had a chance to test the setup, finally :-D

Mind you, it was in a Sony store (did a 100km drive for it LOL) but after talking the whole setup over compared to an sony SLR with a sales person, he couldn't find a valid reason to buy an SLR instead of the NEX-5N with LA-EA2.

The only advantage would be in-body stabilisation of the SLR's.
Other than that, the focus seems as loud/quiet and as fast/slow as on the SLR's.

Regarding the fast/slow, I tested a 70-300mm and switching from a near to far subject caused the lens to get really loud and it took a second or two until the lens adjusted.

We must take into account that some of the cheaper lenses have a cheaper mechanism, requiring more (screw?) turns to go from a near to far subject.

I'm really leaning towards this adaptor now, with the good sony 18-250mm.

It kind of makes sense, because that lens is faster/sharper/quicker to focus than the Emount 18-200! And the cost is actually about the same! :)

GRRREEEEAAAATTT!!!!!!
So LEA2+"long lens" is better than the same priced 18-200?!?
What about dimension?
Which is bigger?

Thankyou

The LA-EA2 + 18-250 will be a little longer, not "thicker".

Keep in mind that this setup will not have stabilisation, whereas the Emount 18-200 does have in-lens stabilisation.

It WILL make a difference in the end, but hey...although I can't say how much, and what setup to prefer. I have yet to handle a 18-200, anyone else can relate to this?

Each setup has it strengths and weaknesses I'm sure...but he Quick focus is really fun!

Thankyou.

What a bad news losing stabilisation!
I usally take pics with an old manual lens not stabilized.

Its a Micro Nikkor 55mm f3.5 that becomes a 82mm so when I need shoting at 1/50 or 1/40sec I got 20% of pics a little blurred because I'd need shoting at 1/80sec.

I try imagine a 18-250 that becomes a 27-375 how many problems in dark days or lowlight situations...

Sincerely a 18-200 stabilized pic "became sharper" than a LEA2 + 18-250 without a tripod if You shot slower than a 1/400sec.

What do You think about?
Does exist any Sony stabilized lens?

I just finsihed 4 days of chsing trains around Socal. I had the 5n with the LA-e2 adapter and primarily used the 16-80 lens with it although I did use the 18-55 kit lens from time to time. My primary instrument(s) were the a900 and the a700.

I used in both wide focu mode and spot focus mode and I had object racking turned off.

I'm not a Nex guru by any stretch so part of my comments should be colored by that fact. In general, I did not see a discernable difference between my a900 and the Nex with the adapter. I should also note that many of the trains were more or less head-on with the trains moving at speed. I thought the camera did reasonaby well in tracking (AF-C) mode. I will admit to having some difficulty in interpreting the flashing squares as to exactly where the 5n was focusing. It seemed to me that some of the squares were ahead of the locomotive so it wasn't clear to me exactly what that meant. Was it in fact predicting where the train would be or was it some artifact?

That said most seemd to be sharp and withing focusing context although I haven't reviewed them at home yet.

I summarize by saying that I'm glad I bought the adapter. I got into the 5n because of the modulairt concept and it appears to meet that need (including manual focus lenses) very well. I suspect there are a few pics which will get 16 x 20s from them.

Sorry I cannot show any pics because I have not returned home at this point.

Hello Timothy,

Thank you so much for your reply!
Finally someone with clear answers, having handled multiple systems.

Means a lot! Pictures are more than welcome, videos of how the system performs with multiple lenses even better!

I dont want a big sluggish slr, and the modular nex seems to fit the bill perfectly!

i have Sigma 17-70 OS HSM alpha mount and nex 5n.
I am waiting to see if i can use this lens with new adapter and have OS .
It would be very nice....

There is a DPreview policy of no bumping, i.e. posting to a thread simply to keep it near the top of the forum thread title list. Hope the original poster or anybody in this quite poorly titled (i.e. boring, almost free of information title) thread has not done that.

Also, everybody who starts a thread wants the topic to be "kept alive", or they wouldn't have started the topic. So it's redundant and thus annoying when someone posts a thread with almost no meaning like "LAEA2" and furthermore says "please keep this topic alive!". The only nice way to keep a topic alive is to have interesting posts in the thread , which by the way are unlikely to happen if the title is vague and uninteresting.

This thread title is about as much fun as reading a thread titled

"I had an LAEA2 question, and nobody answered it. I still have that LAEA2 question, and I still want everyone to please read further into this thread and please answer it! Even though I don't want to bother improving the thread title!".

Why say "please answer!". Of course you want people to answer some question about the LAEA2, or you wouldn't have posted it. The thread's true title, stripped of all annoying extra words, is really "LAEA2". My advice to the average poster is to not expect a thread so simplistically and uninformatively titled (as to even the kind of question someone has about the LAEA2-price? features? use? performance? Ownership by Gwyneth Paltrow?) to have legs.

I post lots of boring topics that nobody responds to. My conclusion has always been that those topics were not interesting. It never occurred to me to start a thread with one word from the failed thread title, only adding the phrase "please keep alive!".

I am not saying that we all have an obligation to start interesting threads, or similarly that we "should" to be able to predict what is interesting. I just hope that, when a thread fails to provoke responses, we will start an improved thread, rather than keep re-posting the failed thread with ever more noise/redundant words attached to it like "really wanted a response on this topic!".

Am not saying the original poster here is a bad person, or dumb, or a bad writer, or has no "right" to post whatever they want. All the persons on this forum are probably above average types of folks in some ways, and we all have a right to say anything that doesn't break DPreview's rules. I'm just making fun of the original poster's thread title in this case, and welcome and invite anyone to further criticize and make fun of this post's criticism ad infinitum .

Please, can we have a video of you typing this post?

I did one video about a minute long and it seem to keep focus nicely and tracked well.I'm pretty sure I shot the video with the 16-80

It handled well as i did not feel that the camera was uncomfortable in my hand. My hand wrapped around the base of the adapterwith my little finger on the right hand side of the lens barrel and my thumb on the left. The base of the adapter fit nicely across the palm from hand from the pad below the thumb to the little finger pad. Weight was not an issue. The only thing I noticed and it may be operator error was that I seem to use exposure comp (+.3 to +.7) more than I expected to get the histogram to expose to the right. That may be because the SLT mirror is in the way or operator error. Don't have enough experience with the camera to tell.

From this day forth, you shall be know as...."RussellDogg".

But ok, I'll play, I'll reply :)

My apologies for bumping this thread, I was unaware of the no-bumping policy of Dpreview.

I'm tremendously sorry I couldn't live up to your intellectual expectations, but seeing as you saw fit to go on a know-it-all gasm, you've actually bumped this thread yourself....with a useless comment I might add.

As you say yourself, a lot of posts, complaints, remarks on this forum die a lonesome death, and I hope so will yours. It almost sounds like you're asking for more useful posts, informative remarks or positive feedback, instead of whining!

On that note, as bad as I seem to be at making useful posts, I'll give you this advice:

If you ever want to post anything or get any responses...lighten up and post something useful will you? Seeing as my previous topics never got many responses, I tried something different as a title.
Look at me, I provoked a post! Ha!

But seriously, a lot of people are looking on more information and feedback with this adaptor and some people on this forum already have one.

So i'd love for these NEX users to post video's of their nex setup and studying how fast/quietly it focusses and such.
Really, a good in-depth review would be welcome!

Tim, thanks for the feedback, could you possibly upload that video on youtube? Thanks! :)
