Hi. So here's the scenario.

I recently bought a Nex-5n to tag along with the A580. Originally for the purpose as a compact, the 5n has held its own in terms of image quality, and even more so in video, so much to the point that it feels redundant to keep the A580. I'm not too pedantic on DSLR sizes; as long as it takes quality pictures, I'll be happy with the camera.

Enough blabbering. So the real question is this. While trying to sell the A580 i came across an interesting offer. Someone was willing to trade his 70 300G sony lens for my A580 body.

Is this a good deal? And although reviews say this lens is decent, from personal experience would you recommend this lens?

Comments appreciated, thanks!

the 70-300G is a excellent lens. probably the best overall telephoto lens in the 70-300 range. Yes, there are lower priced equivalents like Tamron, but the Sony offers focus lock and a focus limiter.

As for the trade, what do you plan to get after the A580? From my experience, lenses are always worth more than bodies. They hold value longer. Especially with the A77 and A65 released, I can only expect the used market for the A580 to go down.

Currently, the A580 body retails for $750 while the Sony 70-300G retails for $900. So I think you would be getting a good deal if the lens is in excellent condition.

I have the nex-5n. I was planning on getting the la ea2 adapter. So the sony 70 300G would work on it too...?
Though it might look a little strange.

Take the deal!

The lens will work on the NEX with the old or new adapter (although it may be cumbersome) and the lens will be much easier to sell in the future than the body, especially on Ebay!

Lens will hold their value better than camera bodies. I would pick a lens over the body (assuming the lens is in good condition). If the lens needs repair, then maybe not as good value.

First, let me say I love my 70-300G. But, it has a huge lens hood, and I must say if mount that rig on the 5N with an adaptor it will be quite a sight.
