I have taken so long to make my decision on which camera to get, which is the D7i, that I am now starting to think I might as well wait to see what happens at Photokina. By the time the cameras announced there come out, there is that show in the spring. Therefore, I apparently will never get a digital camera...

Jim

Thank God for Ebay. I would suggest after sufficient research just take the plunge and ignore what's coming down the road. A year from now sell the 'old and lousy' camera on Ebay and buy the 'New and Improved' one. I have a D7 and am very happy with it but will drop it like a bad habit if and when DSLRs drop below the $1500.00 mark. Maybe I'll be able to recoup the cost of a lens from the sale of my venerable D7 on Ebay...

I am sort of in the same boat. What I am waiting for is the point of 'don't care'. D7i is already very close. I may wait for another generation as the D7i(and other 5MP models) are the first batch of camera using the 2/3" CCD. A little advance in technology can bring it to 6MP with may be even better sensitivity(thus lower overall noise especially in higher ISO). Anything beyond 6MP would be quite optically challenging which may result in form factors I don't like(bigger, heavier lens). So D9 would most likely be the point of don't care for me.

Have any of you guys seen the pictures that are being taken right here and right now with present technology?
You're a long time dead!

Yes I do and I have been saying that the D7i is very close to my point of don't care. I choose to wait for a little longer because I already have a Canon S30 which meet most of my needs, at the moment.

Hey Jim...I'm the opposite...in the last 2 years, I've owned 5 digitals...coolpix 990, 995, 5000...Dimage 7...and currently the 7i.

If you are careful in buying, you'll do fine. I probably have lost about $200 in those 2 years. Two of the cameras I sold on Ebay...I actually sold them for more than I paid for them.
Go ahead and take the plung...your missing out. I love my D7i.

Yes, that is what I probably will do. I bought the i-mac flat screen and then, just after, they came out with the 17" i-mac flat screen, which I would have prefered. It just drives me crazy. Ah, well.

Thank you all.

think positive! there are better cameras today than Dimage 7i. but are out of range ($$$)... and the 28 - 400 ULTRA AF 25 ISO 16 Mpixels No Noise With RAW Format saved in 0.5 seconds will only come out on Monday, 26th August 2005.

What are you going to do until then? :)

I hope it takes that long.

Could you put my name down to buy your 7i in 12 months for more than you paid for it.
David.

You can't hold on to them that long...I said (5) cameras in 2 years. That's an average of 4.8 months per camera. The secret is to unload them while they are still a current model. I sold my D7 just after Minolta announced the 7i. (Made $85 on that one) It's all in the timing :-)

Well, there you go. I was going to thank the board today, as I went ahead and bought the D7i on Friday afternoon. Low and behold, on Monday, there are two announcements, a recall and a newer version of the camera coming out shortly.

Sigh.

Jim

ps: I do appreciate the Board's help in making my decision. It was invaluable.

pps: Now I just have to decide whether to send it back and wait for the D7Hi or just go with it.

hey Jim :) congratulations! it's a wonderful camera!

That is what happens when you wait and wait and wait and wait and wait.

BTW, I don't know what this D7Hi is. I suspect it is a figment of someone's imaginatiion. The first place that I know it was reported from was when somebody went looking for character strings in the firmware 1.10 fix and found that string in a copyright string. Be good to yourself, take the camera out of the box and start having fun shooting pictures.

Jim, if your camera falls into the serial numbers they made public and you have to return the camera I guess you can always try to do that. just don't forget that between Photokina and the D7Hi in your hands there is a difference of a few months.

Rui

That is exactly it. In truth, it means probably not having the camera until the beginning of next year, or there abouts. I hear the new one is black and has a few new features. I don't care about the black, but I never know which features might help me. However, I do think I will move on and just use this version of the camera, as you and Jim suggest, as well as many other kind boardite's. It truly is a never ending cycle, which was the point of my initial message, written only half in jest.

I also got the 3600, as I know that the better flash will make a big difference to my photos.

I think you'll do the right thing. And don't forget that an upgrade was available for the D7 users, when the D7i arrived. Perhaps in a few months we can have a new firmware version or an upgrade that will give us some of the new features the D7Hi may come with.

The 3600 will be my next investment. Now go and take some pictures! :)

Life is to be lived. Every minute count. Wondering, waiting and regretting just pulls you away further from living. Enjoy your camera, take good shots and then get rid of it when you are tired of it. Then play a new game with another new camera.
