I inherited an older Windows PC from a relative, and have decided to put it to use, after a hard disk upgrade, as a backup server on my little home network.

I would like to have the other two machines (also windows based, XP and ME) on the network send a copy of key files (like my image files) to the server on a regular basis.

What I am hoping someone out there can help with is the recommendation of some software to accomplish this. Here are the key features I would like to have:

1. Unattended and automated.

2. Obviously the ability to work across the network and with WIN 98se, ME and XP.

3. I would like the files to be stored uncompressed on the destination drive.

4. Simple and affordable.

Any ideas anyone. Thanks!

Check out "Second Copy." http://www.centered.com/ This $30.00 software is incredible. It is so easy to use and so versatile. They have won a lot of awards and have a 30 day free trial. I can not say enough good things about this software. I have tried others but found them unreliable and very difficult to use. John

There are a few options out there.. I tried about 10 different programs a few months back before I finalized on SmartSync Pro. Easy to setup your intial copy lists, then lots of options on when to do the copies, what to do if there are updates, or deletes.....

Free trials avail, $35 to reg.

Cheers..

A couple of choices here:

1) Use a DOS batch file with XCOPY to select folders and copy across the network. By using the " S" switch you can process subdirectories.

2) I'd take a look at Karen Kenworthy's "Replicator" program. http://www.karenware.com - the price ($0) is right, and you can even get VB6 source code...
