I have run out of gray seamless, and have no clue what paper I had. It was a neutral light to mid gray. Unfortunately B&H lists 17 gray Savage papers. Anyone know which of these are the most neutral?
  1. 12 (Studio Gray)
  2. 14 (Gray Sky)
  3. 15 (Suede Gray)
  4. 26 (Slate Gray)
  5. 27 (Thunder Gray)
  6. 32 (Light Gray)
  7. 54 (Charcoal)
  8. 56 (Fashion Gray)
  9. 57 (Gray Tint)
  10. 60 (Focus Gray)
  11. 61 (TV Gray)
  12. 70 (Storm Gray)
  13. 72 (Machine Gray)
  14. 74 (Smoke Gray)
  15. 84 (Dove Gray)
  16. 8 (Stone Gray)
  17. 90 (Soft Gray)
Probably one of Studio, Light, Fashion, Gray Tint, or Focus?

I can't say which one you had, but I have always used Thunder Gray.

I can make this background look anything from almost completely black to almost white depending on how I light it.

This background also works well with gelled lights to produce nice saturated colors.

From Savage, the "smoke grey" is the most neutral grey (close to 18% grey card) IME.

I've been pleased with Thunder Gray and Dove Gray.

Thanks guys,

Thunder looks a little darker than I want, so I am going for Smoke (74). Both Savage and B&H have been out of swatch books for a while, or I could have looked for a match. The offset printed chart I have from Savage, the online chart at Savage, and the colours displayed by B&H don’t match with one another. They are close enough for some colours, but the blues, greens and grays are so discrepant.

yes , that's the closest

but with "digital" I find the 18% value to be not as accurate as it used to be with film. (the 18% is mainly to be used for metering, while for white balance in digital -again- I'd rather have something close to 12%)

in any case the smoke grey from savage should be the closest to "neutral" -at least with film.... "
