School is starting up soon so that means sporting events. What would be the best lens to use to get a nice close up shot? I used the 18-55 today at a scrimmage game and it just wont do.

Here ya go! Slap this baby on and get close.

Canon 500mm f5.6L

Either that or try walking closer to your subject. That usually works for me.

At the moment the only E-mount tele lens is the 18-200, that lens will get you "closer" if it will be enough is har to tell.
For the near future the rumored 50-210 lens might be cheaper.

You can always try to put some MF lenses on the Nex and see if that works for you. I think the alpha SAM/SSM lenses will focus to slow for sport, or the also ruoored SLT like adapter might help....

Jessica - Please ignore the idiots here. The only AF lens that will do what you need is the Sony 18-200. it will give you the reach you need and from what I hear it is a very good lens.

Hi, I'm new to the NEX and have all 3 current e-mount lenses on way with a NEX-5. I switched over from a Panny GH1 w/ 20mm, 14-45mm, and 45-200mm. I notice that in a few Vimeo video samples of 18-200mm, the AF is a bit slower than I would like, even outdoors with plenty of light. Any firmware updates or tricks to speed that up a bit at full zoom? Thanks and looking forward to my NEX. I decided to skip on a GH2 upgrade to go to a NEX-5.

I just wrapped up AAA baseball season and used a 200mm 3.5 Minolta MD mount manual focus lens with very good results. After shooting several games you will adapt easily to focusing manually and catching very good MF shots. I was able to roughly preset several typical locations using 7x mag then catch the shots at that location. Another plus is spraying the area with shots you will get a keeper out of each burst. Forgot to mention I used a monopod which really helps the obvious. Yeah I would like to have AF but I have found too many times AF focused on something I wasn't interested in or not fast enough. I'll post some images shortly.

Why calling people who try to help Idiots or smart mouths?

What you are saying above is what I said in my post. Are you calling me a idiot or smart mouth?

Try to be a little more freindly here...

Given the choice, I'd rather have a MF lens with a bigger aperture than an AF lens with a slower aperture. Especially for sports. Yes, you'll miss some shots with MF, but you'll miss plenty of others with a slow lens. Even at f/2.8 you'll (sometimes) need to turn the ISO up to eliminate motion blur.

For NEX -- keh has a 200mm f/2.8 in Cannon FD mount for $130. If that's too much, there's also a 135 f/2.8 for $56.
