Just wondering about the new lens I bought for my D7k, the optics and everything else is fine but what startles/makes me a bit nervous is the Autofocus making a slight screech or high pitched noise when the focusing elements move from 0.38m to infinity.

From infinity to it's closest f-distance 0.38m, it's quite natural there is no un-natural sound except for the normal focusing mechanisms.

So is it a big issue with the motor defect or it's just purely normal?

I had the same with mine, when I contacted Nikon they told me to return it.
So I took it back and the shop swapped it over for a different one.

Sounds way to loud, nothing like the demo I used in the camera shop on Saturday (tested it before placing an order for one).

nah i think i was trying to listen very carefully to that high-pitch noise. it sounds normal from quite a distance now, but i have to put my ear right next to the thing to hear the tiny screech..

for me i find it's not so much of an issue, the screech isn't too significantly loud that it can be heard at a considerable distance (15-30cm?)

it wasn't close to this kind of sound like the youtube link u posted (audio-recordable on camera)
got mine a few days ago and having the same issue, except mine is both ways.
here's a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8Vs_tQhEgE

is that normal?? my 70-300 is way more quiet than that.

R U kidding? How much did you spend on that lens? You should be able to sneak up on a sleeping grizzly with that thing (not officially recommended as a lens testing procedure).

1800$ in Perth...

For some reason I tested this lens autofocus many times, and it turns out that my young sensitive ears (18 years) can be able to hear that high-frequency screech.

But when I asked my brother (24 years) to see if he can hear the high-frequency... he says he only hears it as normal and says it's all fine! Which proves to be a problem... from this example, only young & sensitive ears can only pick up this "high pitch sound" ...

Now is this another problem? :((... even the guys at the store where I purchased this lens are way older then me and I might get the same "response" from them saying "it's fine!"..

Help? :(

Is it possible for you to try another copy of that lens and apply your dog-like listening skills to it? If it makes the same noise and only you and a stray mutt can hear it, you are probably OK.

The store owner, He told me it was some kind of sonic wave mechanism or some s* (from a canon user) and he told me he has the same issue with his canon gear & he told me it's all normal, not a defect (judging by him as a store-owner he has more experience in photography then me). He told me the situation I described to him is exactly the same as what he experienced before & told me is normal.

He told me as long the focus is perfect & always on par with the standards, don't care about that tiny tiny high-pitch screech. so thank god... took all that stupid stress & freak out of me...

problem solved :D

The lens is supposed to be quiet. If it's not quiet, it's not right. You paid a lot of money for it, so return it now while you can. Do not accept it with the whine... it may focus fine now, but the whine could turn into something worse later.

Just my 2 cents...
