Can someone tell me the difference? I know how their function differs, but what is the physical/technical difference?

Thanks,
Jim

I just bought the CRT Spyder with Optical myself. I don't think I'll get a flat panel monitor (famous last words) so I opted to get the CRT version wiht the upgraded software. It has worked very well for me on one monitor, the other has very limited controls and thus the calibration is a little limited as well

In reading the manuals available from the website, it looks as thought the CRT/LCD Spyder is physically the same except that it also comes with a small bracket that attaches to the sensor side of the Sypder then hangs form the top of the laptop/flat panel. It is done this way because I would imagine pushing suction cups onto an LCD panel (then yanking them off) is a bad thing.

Don't know if this info helped...

That is what I was wondering. Maybe one could fabricate the bracket and use the CRT model for LCD's also.

The crt/lcd version is the CRT version, plus a little lcd piece that you attach to the regular spyder (with what looks like to me a small piece of cyan IR glass) and a plastic holder that hangs on the top of your LCD monitor.

I don't see why you can't purchase the extra stuff (unless the new spyder is designed differently to hold the little lcd piece).

At any rate, the whole thing is kind of a kludge; the plastic hanger doesn't hang that well, especially on laptops.

Hopes that answers your question.

There are two differences :

1) the suction cups could damage the LCD monitors, so the LCD/CRT spyder comes with special attachments : you hang the spyder in a kind of spcial grip at the top of the triangle and there is a kind of hook you can attach at the top of the monitor (that hook could be better studied IMO).

2) you take away the little rubber skirt of the CRT spyder and attach a special LCD part instead. this part is as high as the suction cups and prevent them to touch the monitor; it is triangular and it's center contains a kind of honey comb which makes sure that only straight rays goes into the measuring sensors..

BTW : Colorvision was offering a hardware upgrade for those already having a CRT only spyder and wanting to make the upgrade. Take a look at their http://www site. (I think it's http://www.colorcal.com - Quoted from memory..)

There is a baffle that sits between the LCD & the Spyder.

According to Chromix:

The Spyder does not work well with Laptops. LCD screens have limited viewing angles that cause difficulties. Small changes in the placement of the Spyder will cause different profiles. Some Apple Studio Displays (LCD) calibrate well, due to their increased viewing angles, but laptops' screens are especially poor for PS. The Eyeone system works better with LCDs than Spyders.
