B&W from grayscale

Basic question... how does one make a B&W image from a grayscale image? Such as pulling text from a scanned image where there are light gray areas in the background. Increasing contrast sorta works, but not well. Maybe a filter?

Adjustment Layer - Selective Colour - White take black or colour out of the background with the sliders. The Black and use the black slider to increase the black in the text. Hope this helps.
