I have just bought a GRD I on eBay. My intention is to leave it set to B&W mode and get some good shots of my grandchildren and landscapes when I am out on my bicycle.

Does anyone have any recommendations about the best settings to use? I was attracted to the GRD I because the pictures are said to look more analog and more gritty than with other compact cameras. I love the idea that the results can look like they were taken on Tri-X. I used to use this film in 'the old days'.

Many thanks for your advice.

I'm not sure if the GRD 1 has the same functions as the GRD 3.

With the 3, I'm using it in manual mode and I have the AE lock assigned to FN1 button. When in Manual mode the GRD 3 has the really cool facility that the AE function button will act by setting the aperture/shutter for the optimum exposure and you can fine tune it from there.

Give it a go, see how you get on!

1600 ISO jpg with latest firmware set contrast=max sharp=min EV=-0.3

Fiddle to taste from there.

High ISO & good light? half the fun.

From my GRD III review here: http://ricoh-gr-diary.blogspot.com/2009/12/ricoh-grd-iii-review-part-1.html

Color: Contrast +2, Sharpness + 1 and Color Depth -2

B&W: Contrast +2 and Sharpening at +1

I only use it in ISO 400 and 1600 for b&w and only go to 200 if the light levels are too high and also overexpose +0.3.

This gives you the nice grainy b&w pictures like this:

Took the camera out to a small function last night. I set it to ISO 400, contrast +2 and sharpness +1, EVO -0.3. I am very pleased indeed with the results. This is one photo I particularly like. Am I on the right track?
