I stumbled upon a blog post from late April. Does anyone think these specs are realistic?

The same source said the higher-end NEX-7 will be announced in mid-July and begin shipping in September. Under the claim, it would have a 24-megapixel sensor, multiple manual controls, and a body made up of high-quality materials. It would have the ability to record 1080p video at 30FPS or 720p video at 60FPS. A three-million dot viewfinder is present as well. Along with a kit lens, it is expected to cost $1,300.

I, personally, think it's a bit too much. Especially the price tag.

The price is highly suspect. This would put it near or maybe even over the A77... im not sure if Sony is prepared to do that. Its also 2x the price of the nex5.

Reading the GF2 review sounds very very similar
Panasonic DMC-GH2K-S Silver - $1,299.00 (this is the cheap kit)
AVCHD :
1920 x 1080p 24fps* (approx 23 or 17 Mbps)
1920 x 1080i 60fps (Approx 17 or 13 Mbps)
1280 x 720p 60fps (Approx 17 or 13 Mbps)
Gone is the slightly slippery (and easily marked) rubberized coating, replaced by a more 'serious' crinkle finish designed to mimic the look (but sadly not the feel) of magnesium alloy.
'Hands on' interface offers plenty of physical control points
Viewfinder
• Electronic Viewfinder
....
• 1,530,000 dots
So Sony will improve slightly on top of GF2 and release NEX-7....not so bad. I hope NEX-7 is smaller then GF2.

G3 look much better.

I have few doubts related to NEX-7 though:

1. If it is very good it will appeal more then the SLT

2. If Sony provide it real video modes it will appeal more then VG10

So I would doubt the rumor for this camera relased along A77 in 2011.

I do still hope Sony prove me wrong and produce magnificent NEX-7 - for sure they can do it. This will be great for their investors as well.

Too many 'this and that'
  • the 24MP is rumored for the full frame sensor, not the APS-C sensor. Noise and low light performance may keep the APS-C sensor below 18MP.
  • a 3M pixel electronic viewfinder is wishful thinking, state-of-the-art is half that
  • multiple manual controls and evf demands a bigger body, speculation ranges from a Konica/Minolta A2 to a shrunk alpha A55.
  • one speculation is detachable EVF
  • another speculation is NO touchscreen
  • pricing seems based on recent competitors' announcements (from panny to fujifilm), not on anything of substance - it seems high for the NEX line.
  • the NEX-7 is seen by many as 'PRO' level, not sure if Sony sees the NEX line as a 'PRO' line - they are pushing SLT for this (A-mount and FF offerings).
  • better video support for sure: both the e-mount and future APS-C sensors are targeting 'professional' video cameras using e-mount. A NEX-7 will benefit from this.
  • high quality materials, yes - like the NEX-5 and the e-mount lenses (compare e.g. to the plasticky/rubbery dSLR lenses).
Most of what we have seen so far is speculation, not fact. Too many features and the NEX-7 becomes an A77, too few features and it remains a NEX-5.

The A77, at least in mock ups. appears to be really big, however.

There are a lot of threads about what we 'would like' to see in the NEX - adding to a confusing list of features - that doesn't mean that we will actually get it. Asking doesn't hurt though, I am sure that Sony is listening.

Agree in general but...

No 24MP is the rumored APS-C for A77, D400, NEX-7
  • a 3M pixel electronic viewfinder is wishful thinking, state-of-the-art is half that
Which is actually 40% increase .....not so difficult to see that for 2 years viewfinders improve by 40%

Professional video is FS100. All the rest of the cameras use photographic sensors which deliver amateur quality at best.

Sony have VG10 though and this may result in crippled video on the NEX-7 - very bad

I wonder if the NEX-7 is 20% more expensive then A77 then possibly Sony are bidding more on the NEX-7?

A77 is rumored to be 1099$, NEX-7 - 1299$

I would think NEX would be the better camera.

Yeah there is a mirror inside and minimum of 50mm thickness going with it. NEX can be as thin as NEX-5

you´re absolutely wrong about the video comments- pros are using dslr´s with aps sensors everyday to shoot professional video

Yep this was the trend for few months....but now FS100 is out and seems Panasonic and Canon will soon follow. Simply they have not explored much the advanced video amateur market.

There is one so likely we will see specialized devices.

First all you read about the Nex7 is RUMOR!

Remember the A7x(x) camera IS announced by Sony as a camera in development (they showed the moclup, not for the Nex7)

What will the Nex7 be when it comes, and it is still a big IF if it comes? Wel nobody here can tell, even the price looks very stranges, as the A77 is said to be arround $1100 and the Nex7 would be $1300, even when it should be cheaper to make (no mirror, smaller body no expencive AF module, no build in AF motor)? I don't think so, but then again I don't know what Sony is thinking... So who knows?

Actually the state of the art is 1280x800, as in the RED Bomb EVF. And the way that dots are counted, 1280x800x3, this gives a bit more than 3 million dots.
