I am looking for the best wide-angle lens for my T2i to take along with me on a trip to France. I plan on taking a lot of landscape and architectural pictures. However, I'm not really feeling the fish-eye effect, but perhaps someone can tell me the benefit of having one. Also, I'm not looking to spend over $600 US.

Canon EF-S 10-22mm

Edit: No need to mention you don't want a Fisheye ... Wide angle is typically associated with rectilinear lenses.

Hi canonfan4ever.

Have a look on this message:

Canon 30D is the same 1,6x crop factor as your T2i. So, everthing would be the same in a Sigma 8mm FE or Canon 10-22mm.

3 generally very highly regarded options are canon 10-22 efs, tokina 11-16 2.8, and sigma 8-16. each have their strenghths and weakness. for interior and architecture, its nice to have 8mm, however, for interior shootings, the 2.8 aperture of tokina may come in handy. the 10-22 obviously gives you the widest range, so the question is what other lens you are taking. If you are taking a 17-55, or 15-85, I would go for tokina or sigma.
the 2.8 is also great for indoors video.

You will be hard pressed to find any of the 3 lenses mentioned for under$600. The Sigma 10-20mm 4-5.6 is every bit as good as the Canon and you can buy it new in the mid $400's. Abe's of Maine with a discount code will get it to you for $434. The lens also comes with a 4 year warranty. The Sigma 8-16mm is great, but quite a bit of more money.

both tokina and canon run for 600 in used market. a search on fred mirnada shows a sigma 8-16 sold for 520.

while I have never used the 2 other lenses belong a quick instore test I can whole haertedly tell you that the tokina 11-16 2.8 is an incrediable lens. I have taken more great photos with it than probably all of my other lenses combined. It is very sharp at all f-stops but 2.8 and even at 2.8 its pretty sharp (I have taken many keepers at 2.8). I can also say that the biuld quality is defenelty better than the canon offering which I think feels a bit cheap. its close to your budget as well (worth the 40 bucks over you budget)

I shoot mainly landscapes but am trying to learn protraits better. You will find me shooting mainly at night as well as it seems to be the only time that i can get out anymore :P

+1 for the Canon 10-22, it is a magnificent lens.

But as pointed out, the Sigma f4-5.6 might be a better option due to the lower cost.

If you can push the budget, any of the Sigma 8-16, Tokina 11-16, Canon 10-22 would be the best choices, depending on which lens best suits you - as mentioned; wide (Sigma - 8mm) vs aperture (Tokina - f2.8) vs all rounder (Canon - f3.5 and 10mm-22mm).

The Canon 10-22 EF-S lens takes awesome pictures and will be great to take on your trip.

i'm preferential to the canon 10-22. i think it's the "best" lens you can get. it costs more, but it's far more versatile than any other UWA lens. (i could not live with an 8-16 or 11-16mm lens. i really do appreciate that 20+mm range and use it quite frequently).

if you are going to france and are only carrying one lens, i think a 10-22 would be FAR FAR more useful than an 11-16 or 8-16. 22mm at least gives you an opportunity for normal-wide-angle photos. the 10-22 also focuses very closely and has an impressive magnification ratio. this is important for getting close up details.

now the $600 budget is a bit tight. i would definitely look for a used 10-22. i sold my 10-22 for $650, i believe? maybe $625. i don't remember it was about 18 months ago on craigslist.

if i could not afford the canon i would go for the sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6. it retails for about $500 new, i think. it's cheaper and has better reviews than the 10-20 f/3.5 version.

i would skip the tamron 10-24. this lens does not get reviewed well in comparison to the other lenses. if i were going for a cheap non-canon lens, i'd go with the sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6

as for the sigma 8-16, tokina 11-16 f/2.8, and tokina 12-24 f/4... these are all fine lenses but i do not think they offer the versatility and convenience of a 10-20ish lens. the 8-16 and 11-16 miss the 20+mm range, and the 12-24 misses the 10mm wide end.

also none of them focus as closely or offer as high a magnification as the sigma 10-20 or canon 10-22 (or nikon 10-24, which is what i presently shoot with)

Is the 10-22 $600 USD or less?
That would be a geat price.
I have a 7D am using a 17-40 (which is great for my 5D) but looking for wider.

Samyang 8mm FE (Rokinon branded on Amazon). It's soo sharp and not true fisheye so no extreme FE distortion. At under $300 on Amazon its the best value I own ... and I've bought a lot of glass and evaluated it against all the glass discussed in this thread.

Have a look at the Tamron 10-24. Very nice range. This is probably the cheapest of the bunch
