I spent days trying to find reasonably priced laptop for photo editing and could not find anything except DELL XPS 15.

It has display far superior than Makbook - cover full Adobe RGB with 600:1 contrast

and price is a way less than Lenovo Thinkpad 510 - 950$ for sandy bridge i5:

Lenovo Thinkpad X220 with IPS display seems a good choice as well, but 12.5" is too little for me to work in CS.

Any thoughts?

I have no idea if it's the best - it definitely seems more than good enough...
I ordered a XPS 17 a few days ago... long wait for actual delivery

Photo editing needs the best screen/monitor you can afford. That must be your first priority for selection.
Can I make a suggestion as to brand/model? Sorry, no, I don't use laptops.

If you are really serious about photo editing, you need an external monitor. I would suggest getting an 'average' laptop, then spend the money on for example an IPS-panel monitor. A 23in Dell IPS is under $200.

I have an XPS-15, and the 1920x1080 display is relatively good. As always, except for mega-expensive laptops, the display isn't going to be fantastic, but it's much better than previous (Dell, HP, Tosh and Lenovo) laptops I've used recently, and quite good enough for reviewing and even editing photos away from base (non-destructively - so you can change later on a better display). It's quite brisk with Lightroom and Photoshop.

I'd certainly not regard it as a desktop replacement for photography without an external monitor, though.

i7 2720QM/6 Gb/GT 540M 2Gb/FHD rgb display/Bluray - 1260$ with DELL coupon.

More than 1000$ less than more or less same Macbook Pro and XPS 15 has better screen

I run the Dell Studio 1558, It has the i7 q720, 8 gig of ram, LED 1920x1080 and the ATI 1 gig card. I put a hybrid 500gb SSD/7200 rpm hard drive in it and bumped it up to 8 gig of ram. I bought it refurbished and at the end of the day it cost me less than $1000 it is a great machine and I love it. My only complaint is 3 USB ports but one is an eSATA so you can just hook up external storage and you are good to go. I have a 24" external monitor on it and it is a powerhouse.
