Caution !!!

I've enrolled with them on January 11 2011, Its been over two month I still haven't received any letter or material from them !!! They charged my credit card straight away.. quoted in the enrollment email

"In a few days you'll receive your actual Student ID Card in the mail along with the NYI Welcome Booklet that will tell you more about the school, our procedures, and what you can expect during your training. Shortly after that, your Unit One package will arrive. Since packages take a little longer in transit, please be patient."

It being over two month I haven't received any. I am starting to get discouraged with the whole NYIP experience. Who ever is think about NYIP please think again!!

Have you attempted any direct contact with NYIP? I doubt any of their customer service reps scan dpreview forums for complaints. Surely there's a web link and/or a phone number.

How much money did you lose? If enough to be worth the trouble, you can first send a certified letter, stating your complaint and asking for reimbursement. If that fails, try the NYS consumer protection agencies.

Most people who turn photography into a commercial activity that covers rent probably learn DIY, or as volunteer or low-pay helpers to pros. There is nothing wrong with photography schools, except that none can possibly assure job placement. The tuition must be within one's budget for luxuries, like tourism or golf club membership. I'd not squander strategic savings, or incur debt, to attend such a program.

One can also learn about photography by studying useful information that DPR and other sites furnish. The forums they sponsor sometimes furnish bad advice, but that can be instructive too: you learn what does not work, or learn not to believe everything.

Hi Zen,

As a Student Advisor at NYIP, I wanted to take a minute to clear up any confusion. This has also been sent to you via email, but I'll post it here as well. Immediately after you enrolled, we shipped all six Units via Air Mail. Since you are in Hong Kong, this can take a little longer than domestic orders. I've checked with our shipping manager, and we have confirmed the proper address is on file. I expect the delivery will arrive shortly. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us at 212-867-8260 or by email (studentadvisor (at) nyip (dot) com

Thank you,

"Self-study, trial and error, best way to learn photography". That's the best way to learn most things and at one time it was a respected way. Now, if you don't have a formal institution telling everyone that you know what you're talking about then... you don't. The public is much less concerned about what you know and more tuned in to what official stamp you have placed on your forehead. It has created a great demand that many of these for-profit institutions have taken full advantage of.

Sorry to hear your experience but I will recommend NYIP anytime to anyone who wants to learn Photography. My experience has been positive and the Better Business Bureau gives the New York Institute of Photography an A rating.

You should have disclosed you live in HK which can take a long time to ship a package.

Life is good!

Hi Folks, I am 18 months into the NYIP Photography Course and to date I could not fault them. I would highly recommend them to anybody wanting to get a sound foundation in photography, put together in a format easly understood and enjoyable to do.

Cheers Baz
