What a real shame is that.

Local officials activated tsunami warning sirens in Del Norte and Humboldt counties at dawn, and sheriff’s deputies went door to door in Crescent City at dawn to urge residents in low-lying areas to seek higher ground.

Yet some don't seem to heed the warnings. Also it was on the news that the second wave that hit Hawaii was bigger than the first. They warned people to be prepared for the same thing on the West Coat.

You may find that sometimes there are 'serial-posters' on the internet that should read more and type less."

I want to add that I don't approve of his probable death, just that if you defy the warnings, you take that chance. His two friends may be more willing to heed the warnings in the future.

Perhaps wildlife photographers are more aware of what nature can do if you turn your back for too long, disregard the warnings. Still, the desire to get THE IMAGE can get the better of even the best of us. The fine line between daring and dead is so very thin at times.

Well if someone deliberatly goes out on a beach or out in a boat to photograph a tsunami when there are warnigs out - and video available of what happened earlier in Japan - and then gets drowned, I can't have too much sympathy. The people who choose to go surfing when there is a tsunami warning also need to have their heads examined and their life insurance policies revoked.

If you want to photograph a tsunami in California better do it from the top of a cliff.

This Really Does It

Now we are headed for the Big Brother school on How to take pictures of a tSunami .

Maybe we could get the Government to pay for free tSunami Photo Classes .

Or Maybe The Government will require life Insurance for tSunami Photographers .

Or maybe we could get the government to build tSanamy lookout towers for those who are afraid of the water but want to get the best shot possible when the thing comes up out of the pond .

One thing is for sure , ( that means not maybe ) , the law of survival of the best tSunami racers . This is why so many people run the Marathon and the Iron Man .

They are just getting ready for the next tSunami .

There I said it . Well , some one has to .

He's certainly in the running for this years award. Don't feel that you are being "flippant." The man was warned to leave, instead he went in the opposite direction. Did he do that to help others? Nope. :(

What would Bart Simpson call this guy?

I'll say it . . . a dumb@$$!

While I wouldn't ever wish that to happen to anyone, I do believe that he got exactly what he asked for!

I'm sorry to be the one to make that point, but I have to say that I was watching CNN at the time the tsunami was expected to hit the California coast and they were showing live shots from several beaches along the coast, and I was truely amazed at how many Californians were walking their dogs, jogging, riding bikes or carrying surf boards along the beach front at that moment, despite the fact that local officials where trying to get them to leave!

I'm just surprised that only one person was lost in all of this here in the US.

I took this shot in California a couple of years ago and at the time I thought this guy was a dumb@$$, too!

  • "If your insurance company tells you that you don't need a lawyer . . . hire a lawyer!"

After reading several responses on newsgroups regarding the tsunami warning for Hawaii and the west coast, I was surprised how many people thought a tsunami was just a "big wave".

I remember one in particular that said: "7 foot tsunami in Hawaii? Please, I see waves twice that high on the beach here all the time, wake me up when there is some real news".

It's spreading that kind of ignorance that gets people killed.

This is where the schools and news people need to get the word out. 20 foot waves offshore are fine. A 6 foot wave 100 yards onshore is a totally different thing. 6 inches of rushing water can move your car away. 6 feet can move your house.

So someone made a bad judgement & paid for that with his life but does that excuse the posters here who seem to think either it is a joke or an opportunity to jeer at a poor individual who is now dead , he probably has a family who are now in mourning , I hope that they receive more sympathy than has been expressed here.

The radio said he was a recovering drug addict getting his life back together. He had finished a rehab program and moved away from his home town. Probably to avoid the same old crowd.

You are sooooooo right. As we all know, this guy, as well as all of us, would live forever, if only these little quirks didn't come up. Death is sooooooo unusual an event that there are only two ways of taking it - Going into catalyptic shock, in which you immediately drop dead alongside the deceased - Of you LIVE and enjoy life. And in this case (last time I checked) not one of us here had anything to do with this incident - And personally, as someone who has risked his fool life for potential Darwin Award winners, I ask would you?

As part of my spiritual beliefs I believe in laughing and not crying, celebrating and not mourning - You can take you sanctimonious pap and stuff it.

"Oh woe is me, another mortal dead.
I will spend a week staying in my bed,
to mourn this soul, who went to meet his maker,
while photographing a real earth shaker."

BTW. You did notice the effects of the Tsunami on the other side of the world?

You sad character , there are so many false assumptions contained in your diatribe I just can't be bothered to tackle them. I sincerely hope that you are not in a position to harm others with your pathetic attitudes, I suggest that you get help .....

Does anyone really know what the person with the camera knew about the tsumani? How far from the shore was he standing? Was it possible he thought it was safe, maybe expecting waves only two or three feet high?

Yes, a lot of us wouldn't risk it. I know I do stand far away and use my telephoto lens, in situations that I feel are unsafe.
