I'm looking into the 60D and potentially coming from the Nikon world. One thing that struck me as strange was that the AF points seem to remain visible in the viewfinder during composition even after locking the autofocus. The disappear in a Nikon so you see the subject clearly.

Is this just part of the Canon experience or is there a way to make the points disappear?

The 60D's autofocus points are always visible. They're etched onto a screen above the focusing screen.

I don't find it a problem, because I'm used to the more-intrusive split-view with microprism collar in my film SLRs. Plus, they're pretty small.

This is indeed part of the "Canon experience" unless you step up and buy a 7D or 1D(s). Those have a display like the Nikon cameras where the autofocus points disappear. I don't know their exact behavior, though, and it's somewhat configurable, so you should try one out if it's a big deal for you.

Try using a 60D in a store and see for yourself. The points do not get in the way of seeing your subject clearly. Again, try it for yourself instead of asking the internet.
