I have some old 2" square B&W negatives to scan. When I put them in the V500 scanner and scan them the software keeps splitting the negative into "pieces" rather than just scanning the whole negative. It figures the negative should be 2.08 x 1.39" in size, no matter what size I set.

The film strip has two images, but what the scanner does is scans it as 3 2"x1.4" negatives, so I end up with three negatives. The top of the first negative, 1/2 of the first and 1/2 of the second and finally both half of the second negative.

Does anyone know how to get around this?

I am using Mac X 10.6 and the Espson scan software in professional mode.

I don't have the V500. I have the V700 and use the professional selection for setup, however; I will TRY to help.

After the Preview pass, while the entire area is displayed in the preview thumbnails page; suggest you select the area to include for EACH of the "complete" thumbnails. I believe you are using the method to allow the scanner/software automatically make the selections.

Also, the V700 software has a screen to specify the negative size of the media. Perhaps the V500 has the same and that area seems to be set for a different thumbnail image size (such as would be applicable to 35mm or 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 sizes).

Go to the following link.

Then, click to display: Previewing and Adjusting the Scan Area

I have found the area ( in professional mode ) where you can set the size of the negative, but my negatives don't seem to match up.

My negatives are 6.5 x 11 and this isn't a choice.
The only options are 6x4.5, 6x6, 6x7, 6x9

Did you figure out how to select the area to be scanned for a specific image.

The above choices are (somewhat) used for automatically determining the proper layout for Thumbnails in the scanning process.

For example, if you were scanning a 4 x 5 inch negative, there would not be a choice in the above mentioned options.

Perhaps I need to "turn on the scanner" to refresh my memory since I have scanned many thousands of negatives (sizes from Minox 8mm to 4 x 5 inch) and all became so automatic in my work flow that I no longer paid any attention to the specific steps.

Occasionally, with (12) 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 negatives loaded in the negative Carrier, I would scan the entire group (or joining selections) in the group then separate the individual images in Photoshop. However, it is best to have the scanner to scan each image (after any pre-scan processing) and save as individually named images and will include "what was selected" for each image.

As Fred has indicated, select the 6x6 for your mentioned size negatives.

Then, on the first screen, choose professional, Document Type = Film (with film holder), and Film Type select the type film (B/W Negative) or (Color Negative).

Then click Preview and when the preview is displayed, place your cursor (cross hair) at the corner of an image on the screen and hold down the left mouse button and drag to include the area to be scanned for that image.

Repeat the selection for each image. You may make pre scan adjustments for each image after selection so to adjust like you desire (before scanning). Complete this for all images then when ready, click SCAN and each image will be scanned and placed in your (pre selected) designated Folder.

Let us know how you proceed. Like most everything, once you have done this it becomes very easy.
