DXOMark for XZ-1 is up

A constant f1.8 lens would be pretty amazing, im just skeptical because it's been so very long since nikon had a compact cam that appealed to me. Then again, i would have said the same about olympus a few weeks ago...
I do not think it will be 1.8 over the whole zoom, but it is suppose to start at 1.8 and knowing Nikon will probably end with 5.9. But I hope it is more like 1.8-2.4. That would be fine. Guess we will know soon enough if the rumors are correct.

Lesson, buyer beware, compare the actual DxO graphs and read the whole DPR reviews.
Agree, most of these ratings are far less objective than they seem, if only because people have different priorities. It is better to look at real world pictures, but that is a lot of work and only for the more experienced users who know what to look for.

I am also surprised by the low score, but I think DxO mark is correct.

Check the RAW output on DPR at high ISO and you can definitely see a difference between XZ-1 and LX5, despite that the sensor is the same.

The difference that you can see on DPR between XZ-1, LX5 and S95 mimics the differences reported by DxO. That is just my opinion.

I certainly agree that DxO mark only tests the sensor, and that XZ-1 have other strong points. The brighter lens is probably more significant than the hi ISO performance of the sensor.

Nikon has not yet cracked the AF speed issue for their small cameras. If they get it right on this one - good for them - but I would be quite wary.

Well... at least the good news is that DXO has the unit in labs and we could assume they will support the XZ1 really soon in its derawtiser :) !

So let me get this straight, because I was under the naive impression it seems that DSLRs have significantly better DR than compacts, like a couple of f stops typically?
According to DXO though, the S95 has same DR at base ISO as a 550D?!
And better than a slightly older DSLR like a 40D?

I find this hard to believe, any views on this?

I always wondered about the credibility of the dxo mark and to say zx-1 had that much worse image quality then s95 or lx3 is utter horse $hit.

I looked at quite a few samples from all 3 cameras and zx-1 absolutely wipes the floor with s95 and quite a bit with lx5 a well. Sharpness and tonality out of camera is best by far. I played a little with few downloaded files, and as picky and tweaky I get in PP, i hardly had to do anything to the zx-1 files fo make them look awesome.
And that's from someone who shoots with 8k worth of nikon gear.
suck on that dxo mark....

Two questions:

Where did you find an underwater housing for the camera?

I read somewhere that changing the white balance underwater was hard to do. True or not?

Both the XZ-1 and the LX-5 have the same size chip, but one has more pixels even though both have similar usage count.

From my reading the XZ-1 has video features that the LX-5 doesn't and regardless of the ratings that is why I will be buying a XZ-1 for my wife to replace her fz8.

I have a dslr for her to use, but she says it is too heavy. So xz-1 it is if it arrives in time for her trip.

Failing to understand the technical beauty of the results is no reason to lambaste the site ;).

As previously mentioned, DxOMark only evaluates the sensor, not the overall performance of the camera ;).

Clearly, the XZ-1's sensor isn't as good as its competitors or your idealized image of it, but that's true and if you have some personal "beef" with DxOMark then I can't help you ;).
