Did anyone measure how precise is Eye White for white balance? I can suppose that some color shifts would occur, did anyone measured it?

I have some images that are problematic, so would like to get them right.

Thanks a lot!

It gets you pretty close. some WB is to taste - do yo like them warmer neutral? If it's mixed lighting issues or a bad color cast there may be little you can do - B&W or sepia is often a good option.

If I knew how to take a good picture I'd do it every time.

Sorry that I can't respond to eye-white, hope I'm not wasting your time, but I will put in a good word for Expo Disc. Certain difficult lighting situations are rendered perfect with it. Others, like outdoor, pretty much unmixed lighting, aren't much different than A WB.

The purpose of an open mind is to close on something.

Camera stores sells neutral grey cards. These are good for calibration & zone calibration. ( and the back can even be used to reflect a hint of white onto subject, these cards are versatile)

If you get stranded on another planet without greycard; Go for the good old white paper sheet with a solid neutral backing (so colors in the background don't shine through).

But if that is also too much preparation and the location is indoors; spot the white wall or ceiling nearby the photo setting.

Using eye white as calibration point makes just as much sense as using the teeth as white point...

Or use the white sheet of paper and point it at the light source and do a Custom WB. Or a pure white coffee filter works great also. When doing weddings I just use the white wedding dress...

Sometimes when shooting I hide something white in the pic and use that..I use a white dove in many images even in outdoors..when shooting someone I inconspiculously put it in a tree or bush or on the ground behind them..when doingn post processing I just clone it out, no problems.

PenguinPhotoCo - So essentially, I can go for eye, but I need to play with WB some more. OK with me.

jszee - I have ExpoDisc, but it is very hard to get it with. It diffuses the light nice, but variations of color of light from reflected surfaces often cause a problem with ExpoDisc. I stopped using it for that reason. I have WhiBalfor when I need more precision.

daMatrix, Im Kirk: thanks, that is how I usually do it if I don't have anything on me. The reason I asked is that that I have some images where eyes are essentially the only white thing.

Thanks all!

Seriously now. I use Whitebal too. Right on the money. Pun intended.
