Hi there,

My 17-85mm lens has died again and needs repairing ( the apperture flex cable)

I wondering if anyone can tell me of stores or repair agents in either Rio de Janeiro or Salvador in Brazil. I don't have a lot of time to wait around for a repair so was thinking that I may just look at buying a cheaper lens for the rest of my trip and get mine fixed when I return home.

I'm looking at getting an Canon Efs 18-55mm or maybe a Sigma.

Any help finding a store that stocks or repairs Canon lenses would be greatly appreciated

Regards

Mike

Hi Mike,

I live in salvador.

i have a 17-85 that just recently had the flex cable problem.

i found only 2 places here that where recommended.

the place i chose, however, did the fix (i paid R$ 270, something like US$ 160 to do the repair, but had to send it back 2 times because after the first and second try, tha lens would give err99 while on the 24-35 range. out of these ranges, it would focus and operate normally. The repair procedure lasted something like 10 days (they had to buy the flex cable first). Maybe this long wait may not be good for you.

In Salvador, i used "Zoom Cameras" repairshop phone numer 071-3248-0912 (if you are in salvador, use just the lat 8 digits without the area code).

In rio i think you're going to find many shops, but i do not live there, so can't give any directions.

i still have the 17-85 (have a 17-55 now with a 60D), and if you wish, i can lend my 17-85 to you while you are here. You will be my lens tester while it is still on service warranty :)

I live near the airport . Call me at 071-8802-0858 if you wish. i can speak english if you speak slowly :)

best regards

Hi Adilson,
Thanks for the reply.

I don´t think I am going to have the time to wait for a repair.

So I may just look at getting a new cheaper lens like the 18-55 or a sigma for the rest of our trip and get it repaired when I get home.

Are there any good camera stores in Salvador that you can suggest that stock either Canon or Sigma Lens.

Regards

Hi mike,

i know of few shops that sell photographic equipment here in Salvador.

in Rio i think you will be better served.

are you here in salvador already?

i can look in a good (but pricey) shop that sells used photo stuff (they're a "pro" photo shop)

i can call they tomorrow morning and see what they have there.

but i have to warn you that this stuff here is somewhat expensive.

but maybe it's better to pay a high price for a lens than a trip without photos :)

best regards

Hi Adilson,

No we are in Barreirinhas at the moment and look like being in Salvador in about 1 week.

Yeah I´m expecting the price to be high as I been looking on the internet and the prices I´ve seen so far seem high compared to back home. But I think I´m just going to have to pay the extra so I have a lens for the next 4 months.

Has Brazil got a big tax on imported items?

I would appreciate very much if you can call that store the you mentioned just so I have an idea of what is available and how much it may cost.

I want to try and fine either a Sigma 18-50mm F2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM or a Canon 18-55mm IS, I´m hoping more for the sigma as it has the same filter size that the 17-85mm has so I´ll be able to use the filters I have with me. But I realise that I may not find one here.

Thank you very much for your help

Regards

Michael

Hi there again,

I´m in Salvador now,

Can you let me know the names of any camera stores that you know of and where they are?

We are here for a 4 days. And then maybe back after about a week.

Regards

Michael

I will be visiting Rio in two weeks. I work in Porto Alegre but in need of a Monopod while here. I want to carry it instead of tripod. Any camera stores that sell them in Rio or here in Porto Alegre. I have a Canon T5i and a new Sigma 120-400 lens. Looking for a tele converter to fit all once it is on body of camera. Any suggestions as to where to shop
